Data from sectors of the economy and social aspects are compiled and presented by the Office of the Chief Government Statistician (OCGS). This, hopefully enhances the use of statistics for planning and decision-makings. The Abstract presents brief time series information and indices for the years 2009 - 2018 on nine topics: legislature, population, agriculture, industries, electricity and water, hotel and commerce, employment, consumer prices and the general economy. The publication is a product of participation and contributions of various members. OCGS is highly grateful to all who participated in making this publication available. LAND AND CLIMATE A.1 Land Zanzibar Islands lies in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Eastern Africa. It is situated about 30 kilometers from the mainland of East Africa. It is a low-lying island of coral formation, with an area of about 2,654 square kilometers; of which 1,666 square kilometers are for Unguja island and 988 square kilometers are for Pemba. There are also a number of habitat and unhabitat islets. Cloves and seaweed are grown for export; fishing is also important to the local economy. Recently tourism has emerged to be the main source of revenues for the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar (RGZ). The islands’ main sea port is located at Zanzibar Stone Town situated on the western coast. It has a fine landlocked harbor with docking facilities for both passengers and cargo ships. The main airport is Abeid Amani Karume International Airport situated in the western part of the main town. There are four seasons in a year, namely "Masika" which is the main rainy season, experienced between March and May; Kipupwe the cold season, in the months of June to August; "Vuli", short rainy season during the months of September to November and "Kaskazi", the hot season which is experienced from December to February. The average highest peak of rain in 2018 in Unguja and Pemba were recorded in April and May respectively (Table A.2.1).
