Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon 2018 Run for a reason. Standard Chartered Bank is delighted to join the people of Kenya and runners around the world in celebrating the 16th Anniversary of the Nairobi Marathon. As the title sponsor of the Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon since 2003, the Bank has worked tirelessly in collaboration with Athletics Kenya and the Nairobi County Government to enhance the quality of this prestigious event with a view to matching international standards. Over the last 15 years, this iconic race has grown to become the largest participatory sporting event in Kenya, an achievement that has been built on widespread support from our community. Over the past 15 years, the race has successfully brought together world-class runners, local running enthusiasts, wheel chair athletes and supporters in a way that has promoted the spirit of togetherness, positivity and resilience. As a leading financial institution, we are committed to promoting positive social and economic development in the markets where we operate. We invest in communities and work with them to promote social and economic development as reflection of our brand promise Here for good. Our community investment activities focus on health and education, with youth as a target demographic. In appreciation of the challenges developing countries face in health care, we chose to support the efforts of the government and health partners to improve access to child eye health care through improved child eye health care delivery, strengthening human resources for eye health care, expanding infrastructure and equipment for delivery of eye healthcare as well as supporting operational researches on eye care. In 2003, as part of Standard Chartered Bank’s 150th anniversary celebrations, the ‘Seeing is Believing’ initiative which is the Bank’s flagship sustainability initiative aimed at eradicating avoidable and curable blindness was launched. The initiative has recorded much success in East Africa. 2018 is a significant year for Seeing is Believing as we celebrate the 15th anniversary of this noble initiative. Allow me to highlight a few milestones of the Seeing Is Believing initiative in Kenya; since 2003 we have raised more than Kshs 250 million, we have screened 6.2 million people; performed over 170,000 surgical interventions; trained over 2000 health workers and upgraded more than 10 health facilities around the country. All this has been made possible the through the continued participation of Kenyans and other running enthusiasts who continue to grace the race every year. And as a Bank we will continue to invest our resources and man power towards Message from Mr. Lamin Manjang making sure the marathon is successful, all our stakeholders are involved and CEO Standard Chartered Bank Kenya our esteemed participants have the best experience before, during and after the marathon. Being our greatest brand ambassador in driving our visibility not only in Kenya, but beyond borders, we have worked tirelessly to position the Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon as the leading Corporate Social Responsibility event in the country affirming our brand promise: Here for good. It is for this reason that we have set an ambitious target of raising KES 60 million this year. To achieve this ambitious target we expect to host 25,000 participants. A heartfelt thank you to every participant, volunteer and supporter for your dedication and support. I would also like to express my sincere appreciation for the continued support given by our partners; Athletics Kenya, Nairobi County, the National Police Service, NYS, sponsors, other supporting organisations and the community as a whole, all of whom have been instrumental in ensuring the smooth running of the marathon. Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon is the richest race in the region with more than Kshs 8 million in prize money and remains the only IAAF sanctioned race in Kenya. I would like to sincerely thank Athletics Kenya (AK) for the wonderful job the team continues to do towards organising this event. When we joined forces with AK, our objective was to organise a modest race that would help unearth hidden talent in Kenya. 16 years down the line, we have achieved much more than we envisaged; we still take pride in the fact that this event has produced many world stars. The integrity of the race is of utmost importance to us. I would like to assure participants that we have put in place stringent standards to ensure that the Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon measures up to the requisite IAAF standards. Like in the previous editions, we shall continue to use the Chip technology in all races and aerial surveillance cameras from our broadcast partner. To ensure a clean sport we will continue to collaborate closely with the Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya (ADAK). This will complement the services of the Technical Director, Route Marshals and CCTV cameras along the course. I am grateful to our title sponsors Standard Chartered Bank. Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon 2018 Run for a reason. ATHLETICS KENYA PRESIDENT’S REMARKS Kenya has always been recognized worldwide for its athletic prowess and this was proven this year when Kenyan Eliud Kipchoge set a new world record at the Berlin Marathon 2018. The Standard Chartered Nairobi marathon is a key platform in nurturing upcoming Kenyan athletes and celebrating Kenya as the home of long distance international athletes. Hosted by Athletics Kenya, Nairobi City County and Standard Chartered Bank as the main sponsor, over the years the marathon has raised the bar and due to this attained recognition from the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) and Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS). The Marathon is a special occasion that brings together people from all corners of the country and the world, and as the International Association of Athletics Federation we are pleased to see the Standard Chartered Marathon continuously maintain the high standards of athletics in the country. In 2018, the marathon aims to raise the profile of Kenyan athletes internationally while it helps identifying and providing opportunity for the local athletic talent. Moreover, the marathon is set to create a community event for everyone’s enjoyment and raise funds for the less fortunate in the community. The marathon is targeting to raise 60 million to the Seeing is Believing initiative, whose main agenda is to eradicate preventive blindness and visual impairment globally. The program targets children aged between 0-15 and takes a holistic view of child eye health by looking at all the child’s needs. This year marks 16th anniversary of the Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon and 15 years of the Seeing is Believing that has over the years restored sight to over 4500 children in Kenya. Lastly, I would like to thank Standard Chartered Bank and the thousands to participants for their tireless efforts and support to raising the profile of the Seeing Message from is Believing project and we look forward for the journey to continue.
