Tuesday’s “Orange” Market of 38 UTM & OTM prime cattle, 42 cull cows & bulls, 135 store cattle including 8 suckler cows & calves, 70 rearing calves & stirks and 786 finished & store sheep UTM PRIME CATTLE HIGHEST PRICE BULLOCK Each Wednesday the highest price prime steer/heifer sold p/kg will be commission free Auctioneer – Andrew Body An increased entry of mainly good quality prime cattle saw a further lift in the trade with strong demand for all types especially from local and butcher buyers boosted by the seasonal influx of holidaymakers and the opening of hotels, pubs and restaurants etc. A super show of Limousin x heifers forward from several regular good vendors topped at 224p/kg for a 512kg heifer for Messrs. W.H. & L.M. Williams & Son of Allet bought by Mr. D.W. Sobey of Week St. Mary. Close behind at 223p/kg were two Limousin crosses from the Julian Family at Summercourt bought by David Wilton of Peter Morris Butchers, St. Columb and Harvey Bros. Butchers of St. Ives, Penzance & Newlyn. Messrs. G.W. & H.E. Hawkey of St. Wenn sold to a premium of 222p/kg, with their heavier 606kg Limousin x at 220p/kg standing top value heifer selling at £1,333 to Mr. D.J. Moyle, Butcher of Beacon. On the steer side, a Limousin x from Mr. W.L. Hollow of Towednack set the premium at 216p/kg to David Ellis of Lelant. A lack of continental steers forward, yet a nice run of Aberdeen Angus crosses from Mr. C.B. Richards of St. Keverne which met a firm trade with steers selling to a premium of 223p/kg and top heifer at 211p/kg, both purchased by R.J. Trevarthen Ltd of Roskrow. Further steers and heifers from Mr. Richards stood top value overall with his 768kg steer at 209p/kg realising a massive £1,605; and £1,449 for his big 690kg heifer at 210p/kg, both also bought by R.J. A strong trade for dairy sorts with a Friesian heifer from Messrs. S. Wallis & Son of Helston hitting 148p/kg. Friesian cows selling to a premium of 136p/kg for Messrs. M. & J. Rowe of Ashton, with a heavier 881kg cow from the same farm at 134p/kg standing top value at £1,176, both bought by David King of Exeter. An entry of half a dozen super Simmental x steers from Messrs. I.D. & S.S. Backway of St. Eval saw top April-born pairing hit £1,205, with a month-older bunch of four making £1,130. Devon crosses from Messrs. M.S. Manuell & Son of St. Stephen saw steers to £1,035, and top heifer trio at £935. A pair of 18 month old British Blue x steers from Messrs. L.T. Harvey & Sons of Newbridge hit £1,000.
