CLAREMONT News The Events Committee has received so many requests for a repeat performance of the mind reader and superb entertainer who wowed us in 2015! We are so pleased to announce that Mark Stone, The Mentalist, has agreed to return for another performance at Claremont on Thursday night, February 21st. This won’t be a repeat of his last performance. He has an entirely new show for us! Registrations for this exciting event will begin mid-January. Seating will be limited so make your reservations early. Details will be in the Registration Book and in the February newsletter. The Claremont Women’s Club Program for Tuesday, February 12th at 6:30 p.m. will be “STIR IT UP”....”LET’S COOK!” With a presentation by Marilyn Herzog, Claremont resident and food columnist for Bethany Living Magazine. Marilyn will be sharing recipes from her eclectic culinary journey and international experiences that have influenced her relationship with food! We will be sampling three of her appetizer recipes. Be sure to sign up at the front office so we know how many to make! We will also feature a themed raffle basket. Bring your $$$ and win something special! The Events Committee wants to let Claremonters know that they have decided not to sponsor a New Year's Eve Dinner Dance on December 31, 2019. They do hope to hold a dinner dance again in 2020, but felt the event needs a year's break since attendance was lower than anticipated on NYE 2018 - a low of 68 attendees. Also, if anyone knows what happened to the twinkling lights that were part of the table decor on NYE, please notify Linda Tracy, NYE Chair. Fifteen strings of lights were taken sometime between the end of the dance and the cleanup the next morning. These lights are Events Committee property and the plan is to re-use them. If you borrowed them, please return them to the Clubhouse Office. The 2019 Directory is now available for pickup in the Clubhouse. If you haven’t picked up your updated 2018 Architectural and Community Standards book, please pick up that as well. Thank you! W. Bush. Board member Steve Graham worked with Elmer’s Flag and Banner to repair the hoist system and replace the flag. The Landscape committee is having all of the water feature ponds drained, cleaned and refilled this month. Our next Greens sponsored event will be the St Patrick’s Day Celebration on March 17th. The cost is $10 per person. Please sign up in the Events Book outside of the Front Office and place your check in mailbox #23. We will also have new rugs for the Terrace House soon. We finished 2018 with approximately $9,000 below budget. This helps reduce assessments for 2019. These increased by 2.5% over last year. Good work to last year’s board for these results. Greens Grounds Committee: Thursday, February 7th 4:00 p.m. Greens House Committee: Tuesday, February 12th 4:00 p.m. Greens Board Meeting Wednesday, February 13th 4:30 p.m. CLAREMONT CLUBHOUSE Now that the exterior of the Clubhouse has been completed, plus improved landscaping, and new outdoor lighting, it is time to turn our attention to the INSIDE. There is new carpet and new light fixtures in the lower level of the Clubhouse. The Garden Room is about to get a "face lift", and this year the kitchen cabinets will be replaced. Now the Inside: As many of you have said "the Clubhouse is just like your home". Here are a few "housekeeping" items that will continue to make our Clubhouse tidy, safe and enjoyable for all. • When making coffee or preparing for a function, please remember to clean up the kitchen when you are done. Please return the rinsed airpots to the kitchen as well as any supplies that may have been used ie cups, sweeteners, pitchers etc. When using other items in the kitchen, serving utensils, coffee mugs etc., please wash them in the sink and place them in the sanitizer machine. The load will be ran when it is full. • The door between the Card Room and the ice room needs to remain locked after hours. If you unlock it to retrieve ice, please be sure to put the key ring back and lock the door behind you or your event. • The Wall Street Journal, the Oregonian and the New York Times are here for the enjoyment of Claremont residents. We keep two days worth in the Fireside Room for people to peruse at their leisure. Please keep the newspapers in the clubhouse until two days have past. We would appreciate it very much! • There are lots of lights in the Clubhouse. If you turn lights on to enter the room, or you are the last one to exit, please remember to turn off all lights when leaving. • We have been having a few “door” issues that are awaiting the repairs. If it is after business hours, please check to ensure that the door has closed behind you. BOARD REPORT Congratulations to Joyce Adams, and Fred Sutherland upon being elected to the Greens Board of Directors. Also congratulations to Steve Graham for his appointment to the Greens Board. Also, our thanks to Neil Morfitt, Mary Shackleton and Patricia Smith for their participation on the CGSA Board. Steve Hooker will assume the chairmanship held very ably by Mary Shackleton who is retiring. A council of six residents representing Claremont Civic and Claremont Greens will be formed shortly. The purpose is to exchange information and improve communication between the two associations. Vandalism of the entry lights at the West Union/Country Club Dr. and West Union/Claremont Dr. intersections has been a problem lately. Stones have been thrown, breaking the lanterns atop the pillars. Power to these lights has been turned off with the hope the vandals will find no joy doing further damage. Restoration of the light fixtures will depend upon the weather and extent of the damage. The Sheriff’s Department has been alerted and any tips would be appreciated. The committees continue to press onward, meeting the assorted needs of Claremont. As a result, Claremont remains a wonderful place to live. There is always room for another resident to join a committee. Call Briana at the Clubhouse Office to get a list of committee chairs, or contact any Board Member. Future CCA Board meetings will be held in larger and more accessible venues enabling more folks to attend. The Terrace House is one possibility and the Great Room is another. Check the next Quick Communicator for time and place. It has been suggested that when driving to the Bethany shopping area (the backway), one might leave Claremont by turning right onto West Union, another right onto Laidlaw heading directly to Bethany Boulevard. An extra minute or two of travel time, especially during the busy traffic times on Bethany Blvd. trumps near-misses or collisions. CAR BREAK-INS IN BETHANY Washington County Sheriffs Office released this announcement: The Bethany area has been experiencing a rash of car break ins recently. The majority of cars were unlocked with valuables inside. This is a good time to implement the 9PM Routine. (See Below) Practice doing the routine with your older children to teach them about safety and security. When they have it down, have them start doing it themselves or taking turns. Every night at 9:00PM, we encourage the community to lock up property, turn on lights and bring in valuables to reduce the likelihood of falling victim to property crimes. This campaign has proved vast success throughout the country and we look forward to implementing it in Washington County. - LOCK UP your car, house, windows, garage, gates and shed. - TURN ON exterior lights, security cameras and alarm system. - BRING IN valuables from your car, yard, patio and porch. CLAREMONT EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS COMMITTEE On January 8th we had our New Year’s Kickoff, (a great showing with 42 volunteers participating) which included direction setting, abbreviated training, a couple skits, and a short New Year’s celebration. The Committee is plowing ahead with filling volunteer zone leader and regional coordinator positions, establishing Task Forces for the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) and First Aid Responsiveness. The EOC Taskforce met on January 22nd and we are hopeful to Kickoff the First Aid Responsiveness Task Force in early February. Lastly, we are planning a “Get Ready” (Emergency Preparedness) website addition to our current Claremont Civic Website.
