Paul Sellers' Workbench Measurements and Cutting

PAUL SELLERS’ WORKBENCH MEASUREMENTS AND CUTTING LIST PAUL SELLERS’ WORKBENCH MEASUREMENTS AND CUTTING LIST NOTE When putting together the cutting list for my workbench, I worked in imperial, the system with which I am most comfortable. I was not happy, however, to then provide direct conversions to metric because to be accurate and ensure an exact fit this would involve providing measurements in fractions of millimetres. When I do work in metric I find it more comfortable to work with rounded numbers, therefore I have created two slightly different sets of measurements. This means that in places the imperial measurement given is not a direct conversion of the metric measurement given. Therefore, I suggest you choose one or other of the systems and follow it throughout. © 2017 – Paul Sellers v2 PAUL SELLERS’ WORKBENCH MEASUREMENTS AND CUTTING LIST WOOD QTY DESCRIPTION SIZE (IMPERIAL) SIZE (METRIC) (THICK X WIDE X LONG) (THICK X WIDE X LONG) 4 Leg 2 ¾” x 3 ¾” x 34 ⅜” 70 x 95 x 875mm 1 Benchtop 2 ⅜” x 12” x 66” 65 x 300 x 1680mm 2 Apron 1 ⅝” x 11 ½” x 66” 40 x 290 x 1680mm 1 Wellboard 1” x 12 ½” x 66” 25 x 320 x 1680mm 4 Rail 1 ½” x 6” x 26” 40 x 150 x 654mm 2 Bearer 1 ¼” x 3 ¾” x 25” 30 x 95 x 630mm 4 Wedge ⅝” x 1 ½” x 9” 16 x 40 x 228mm 4 Wedge retainer ⅝” x 1 ½” x 4” 16 x 40 x 100mm HARDWARE QTY DESCRIPTION SIZE (IMPERIAL) SIZE (METRIC) 1 Vise 9” 225mm Dome head bolts (including nuts and washers) for 4 ⅜” x 5” 10 x 130mm bolting legs to aprons 2 Lag screws (with washers) for underside of vise ½” x 2 ½” 12 x 65mm 2 Lag screws for face of the vise 5/16” x 2 ¾”” 8 x 70mm 2 Lag screws for back apron 5/16” x 2 ¾” 8 x 70mm Various screws of various sizes 1 ¼” x 3 ¾” x 25” PAUL SELLERS’ WORKBENCH MEASUREMENTS AND CUTTING LIST TOOL LIST • Square • Brace and bits (or screw gun and bits • Knife to suit) • Pencil • Router plane** • Tape measure • Plough plane** • Combination gauge (or marking gauge • Rabbet/filletster plane** plus mortise gauge) • Hammer (steel)* • Tenon saw • 10” steel rule* • Handsaw • Jack plane* • Chisel set ½”, ¾” and 1” (12mm, • 10” rasp* 18mm and 25mm) • 10” flat file* • Chisel hammer or mallet • Winding sticks • Smoothing plane *Optional **Optional but highly recommended EQUIPMENT LIST • A workbench or improvised support of some kind such as: ɐ Two saw trestles or… ɐ a portable, folding workbench or… ɐ a picnic table. • Seven or so 36” (91cm) sash clamps (for frame clamping and clamping the laminated top) • Some shorter sash clamps, bar clamps or G-clamps PAUL SELLERS’ WORKBENCH MEASUREMENTS AND CUTTING LIST 66” 1.68m 2 3/8” 2 3/8” 5 1/4” 5 1/4” 65mm Apron 65mm 11 1/2” 135mm 135mm (inside face) 29cm 90° 90° 9” 38 1/2” 9” 230mm 98cm 230mm 4 3/4” 4 3/4” 120mm 120mm 27” 66” 68cm 1.68m 11 1/2” 29cm Wedge 1 1/2” 40mm 5/8” 16mm 9” 228mm 3/4 2 ” 3 3/4” 70mm 95mm 1” 2 3/4” 25mm 70mm Top rail Rail joinery Bottom rail 1” 1 1/2” 25mm 40mm Note: Haunches on the 1/2” top rail tenons are 12mm 3/4” optional. 18mm 6” Tenons 5” 150mm centered 125mm Note: The bottom rail is longer than the top rail to allow for 3/4” protruding tenons. 18mm 3 1/4” 85mm 3/8” 11mm 3/4” 18mm PAUL SELLERS’ WORKBENCH MEASUREMENTS AND CUTTING LIST 27” 1 5/8” 1 5/8” 68cm 3/4 40mm 12” 11 ” 40mm 30cm 30cm 1” 25mm 11 1/2” 11 1/2” 29cm 29cm 1 ⅛” 29mm to 1” 1/4 centre of hole ” 25mm 6mm Wellboard detail 38” 97cm 3/4” 3/8” 18mm 10mm 6” 150mm 1/2” 12mm 19 1/2” 49cm 9 1/2” 240mm Leg frame assembly end view Note: 2 3/4” 2 3/4” This is the haunch 70mm 70mm 25” recess which 63cm you only need if you are using haunched tenons.
