The 2017 chart year is based on the time period from November 13, 2016 through November 11, 2017. In a very unique year, superstar artists began to collaborate with each other thus sharing chart spins and label share for individual songs. As a result, it brought some of 2017’s most notable hits including: • “Stay” by Zedd & Alessia Cara (Def Jam-Interscope) • “It Ain’t Me” by Kygo x Selena Gomez (Ultra/RCA-Interscope) • “Unforgettable” by French Montana f/Swae Lee (Eardrum/BB/Interscope-Epic) • “I Don’t Wanna Live Forever” by ZAYN & Taylor Swift (UStudios/BMR/RCA-Republic) • “Bad Things” by MGK x Camila Cabello (Bad Boy/Epic-Interscope) • “Let Me Love You” by DJ Snake f/Justin Bieber (Def Jam-Interscope) • “I’m The One” by DJ Khaled f/Justin Bieber, Quavo, Chance The Rapper & Lil Wayne (WTB/Def Jam-Epic) All of these songs were major hits and many crossed multiple formats in 2017. Of the 10 Mediabase formats that comprise overall rankings, Republic garnered the #1 spot at two formats: Top 40 and Rhythmic, was #2 at Hot AC, and #4 at AC. Republic had a total overall chart share of 15.6%, a 23.0% Top 40 chart share, and an 18.3% Rhythmic chart share. Other highlights for Republic this year: • The total label spins for the year across all formats were nearly 6.8 million, their third highest total ever. • Republic grabbed 23.0% of their spins in the Top 40 format, where they scored 3.64 million spins at that format alone. • Republic joined the million spin club in other formats as well, with 1.07 million spins at Rhythmic and 1.02 million spins at Hot AC. • On the artist side, Republic had four of the top 10 most played artists at Top 40 with The Weeknd at #4, Shawn Mendes at #7, Ariana Grande at #9, and Taylor Swift at #10. The label was also aided by one of the year’s biggest hits “Despacito” by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee featuring Justin Bieber. • Republic scored the #1 and #5 most played artists slots at Rhythmic with The Weeknd and Drake respectively. Drake also nabbed the #5 slot at Urban. • It was also a huge year for Shawn Mendes, who was the #2 most played artist at AC, #3 Hot AC, #5 Big Picture, and #7 at Top 40. © 2017 Mediabase Research 2 A big move for Atlantic this year, going from a 7.2% 7th place ranking last year to a 12.1% 2nd place fi nish overall this year. That’s a gain of 68% in label share from just a year ago. Atlantic saw gains at several major formats: Top 40 5.7% (#8) - 14.1% (#2) +139% Rhythmic 5.5% (#7) - 10.9% (#4) +98% Urban 8.1% (#6) - 14.4% (#2) +78% Urban AC 5.2% (#7) - 12.2% (#3) +135% Hot AC 10.1% (#5) - 15.8% (#3) +56% AC 11.2% (#4) to 14.1% (#3) +26% A couple of the key artists behind Atlantic’s 2017 success include Ed Sheeran, Bruno Mars, and Charlie Puth. • Ed Sheeran landed the #1 most played artist honors at Hot AC, #2 at Top 40, and #3 at AC and Big Picture. While Bruno Mars nabbed the #1 most played artist slot at Urban AC, #2 Big Picture, #3 at Top 40, #4 at Rhythmic, #5 Hot AC, and #9 Urban. • Songs by Sheeran (“Shape Of You”) and Mars (“That’s What I Like”) were two of the biggest multi-format songs for 2017. Sheeran’s “Shape Of You” scored the #1 slot at Big Picture, PowerPlaylist, Top 40, and Hot AC. Mars “That’s What I Like” grabbed the #2 spot at Big Picture, Top 40 and Rhythmic, #3 on the PowerPlaylist, and #4 at Urban AC. Mars also held the #3 slot at Urban AC with “24K Magic.” • Atlantic also had a giant multi-format hit from Portugal. The Man with “Feel It Still,” which went to #1 at Top 40, Hot AC, Alternative and Triple A. Interscope moves into the #3 spot, up from #5 last year, and increasing in chart share from 8.2%-11.9% (a gain of 45%). • Interscope ranks 3rd at Top 40, also up from the #5 spot last year, and growing from 8.2% to 13.7%, a gain of +67%. • Kendrick Lamar had a huge year in 2017 for Interscope, which helped the label at both Rhythmic (label went to #3 this year with a 6.8%-11.5% +69% move), and at Urban (also #3, where they soared from 8.4%-12.0% +43%). • Interscope remained at #4 for the second straight year in a tightly contested Hot AC battle. The format was so tight, only 2.5 percentage points separated the top four labels. The label notably increased their market share in 2017 by +38% from 11.6% to 15.2%. • Interscope had a huge second half of the year at Alternative, fi nishing 2nd in 2017 with 12.4% +25% from their 5th place 9.9% ranking last year. On the artist side, Interscope had some strong stories as well, with many of their core artists delivering multiple hits: • Maroon 5 was the #4 most played artist at AC and Hot AC, and #6 at Top 40. • Their song “Don’t Wanna Know,” featuring label mate Kendrick Lamar was the #1 song of the year at AC, #3 Hot AC, and #9 Top 40. • Kendrick Lamar was the #2 most played artist at Urban, and #3 artist at Rhythmic. © 2017 Mediabase Research 3 • Rae Sremmurd was the #10 artist at Urban. • Imagine Dragons captured the #1 artist spot at Alternative and the #9 slot at Hot AC, as their multi-format smash “Believer” was #1 song of the year at Alternative. Columbia ranked 4th in 2017 with a 10.0% chart share, giving the label a second straight year with a double digit overall share. • Columbia came in 4th at Top 40 with 11.4% of the format, one of only four labels to score a double digit share. • Two formats were huge for Columbia. At AC, they were #1 with a 23.1% share – up from 6.8% in 2015 and 18.7% last year. • Columbia landed the #1 slot at Hot AC as well, with a 17.7% share. The label made great strides for the fourth straight year – 11.6% in 2014, 12.4% in 2015, and 14.4% in 2016. • Columbia also scored the #2 slot at Triple A with an 11.5% share. Key players on Columbia’s roster for 2017: • The Chainsmokers were the #1 artist at Top 40 after being #2 in 2016. The duo also ranked at #2 at Hot AC, and #6 at AC. • Adele was the #1 most played artist at AC and #6 at Hot AC. • Maxwell landed the #3 artist position at Urban AC. • Newcomer James Arthur fi nished as the #10 artist at Hot AC. • Rag’N’Bone Man also landed as the #8 artist at Triple A, and his song “Human” was the #2 most played at the Triple A format. Rounding out the top 5 2017 Overall labels is RCA with 8.8% chart share. • RCA was #1 at Alternative and Triple A, and nabbed the #2 slot at AC and Urban AC. • RCA was also top 5 at Hot AC and Urban. • New artist Khalid saw “Location” rank #4 song of the year at Urban and #10 at Rhythmic. • Ro James held the #2 song at Urban AC with “Permission” and Charlie Wilson #7 with “I’m Blessed.” Both artists also ranked in the Urban AC Most Played Top 10 for the year, at #5 and #9 respectively. • RCA had three of the top 10 songs at AC: Justin Timberlake “Can’t Stop The Feeling,” Sia “Cheap Thrills” and P!nk “Just Like Fire.” • Kings Of Leon’s “Waste A Moment” was the #6 song at Alternative and #3 at Triple A. • Cage The Elephant (#2 Alternative , #9 Triple A) and Kings Of Leon (#5 Alternative, #2 Triple A) were top 10 artists at both formats. • Chris Brown was a top 10 artist at both Rhythmic and Urban. © 2017 Mediabase Research 4 Def Jam scored the 6th slot this year with a 7.3% chart share. The label was led by a huge year from Alessia Cara, who had a big hit that bridged 2016 and 2017 with “Scars To Your Beautiful.” The other big story was the recent #1 Top 40 hit by Logic, which also was a top 3 hit at Rhythmic and also charted at Hot AC. • Def Jam fi nished in the Top 10 in several formats: 4th at Urban, 5th at Top 40 and Rhythmic, 6th at AC and 7th at Hot AC. Posting a monumental gain from a year ago is Capitol. This year they moved into 7th place, and more than doubled their market share from 3.0% in 2016 to 6.1% in 2017. • Capitol soared from 1.8% to 7.5% at Top 40 and climbed all the way to 6th place, up 318% in share from a year ago.
