2016 U.S. Women’s Football Leagues Addendum New Mexico Adult Football League – Women’s Division (NMAFL-W) – 2015 Season The NMAFL-W launched in 2015 with five teams in New Mexico. The Alamogordo Aztecs failed to complete the season, while the Amarillo Lady Punishers joined the league late and absorbed four forfeit losses before even getting out of the gate. But the Lady Punishers were formidable once they got started, upsetting the previously undefeated Roswell Destroyers in the playoffs to make it to the first NMAFL-W title game. That opened the door for the Santa Fe Dukes to swoop in and capture the NMAFL-W championship at the conclusion of the league’s first season. The Lady Force got the better of that matchup, winning all three games against their only league opponent to claim the 2015 WXFL title. The league would expand to five teams the following year. The WFA ambitiously split into three tiers of play, and in the top tier, the league had a repeat champion for the first time. WFA2 saw a founding member win a second national title, and WFA3 featured an exciting championship game. In the IWFL, last year’s heartbreak turned into historic dominance for the league’s newest champion. The WSFL rebranded into the USWFL and for the second straight year, a longtime franchise claimed their first crown. The NMAFL-W and WXFL continued to develop in their second seasons, and the LAFL debuted with a four-team league. Leagues: 8 Teams: 96 (87) Games: 381 (349) Women’s Football Alliance (WFA) – 2016 Season The WFA split into three tiers of play in 2016, mimicking the structure used by the IWFL when it was the top league in women’s football from 2008-2010. Despite that massive structural change, the 2016 WFA championship provided an air of familiarity. For the first time in WFA history, the WFA championship game was a repeat of the previous season’s title game, and also for the first time, the WFA had a repeat champion. The D.C. Divas edged the Dallas Elite in a very competitive contest for the second straight year to capture the WFA crown; in addition to being the first team to win consecutive WFA championships, the Divas became the first women’s football team to win back-to-back major national titles since the Boston Militia in 2010-2011. The Tampa Bay Inferno took an undefeated record all the way to the first WFA2 championship game, but they were taken down in the title match by the St. Louis Slam. The Slam, who won the inaugural WFA championship in 2009, captured the WFA2 crown for their second national title in franchise history.
