Alison Harvey - President 1 Workshop 30+ people began the day by brushing on exotic glazes like crackle and copper onto their sample pot. Everyone was a little tentative as no one knew how their pots were going to turn out in the unpredictable ‘happy accidents’ that is Raku firing. After the pieces had dried they were then placed into the outside kilns and fired to a temperature of 10000C. Then, (the exciting bit) the pieces were plunged into a bin with newspaper igniting into a burst of flames. The fire and smoke is required to activate the glazes into the colourful iridescent hues, and it depends on where the fire touches as to the intensity of the colour. With every firing people waited expectantly for their pieces to see the results. With a visual understanding of Raku, everyone’s second piece became more creative and some amazing colours and patterns were produced. After a wonderful lunch of homemade pumpkin soup, vegetable curry, sausage sizzle and delicious salads we were treated to a demonstration of Obvara firing.
