Summary for Stopsley These series of reports provide a summary of the latest available information on the demographic and socio-economic make-up of the nineteen wards in Luton. It looks at the population structure and provides information on the economic, housing and educational achievement of each ward. What’s new – April 2019: Perceptions survey update (i) Stopsley’s view of Luton: 26 per cent feel the image of Luton has improved over the last year 50 per cent feel positive about the future of this town Residents top rated aspects: 1. Sports and leisure facilities (78%) 2. Further / higher education (67%) 3. Health services (65%) November 2018: Housing there are 74,293 households in Luton of which 2,913 (3.9 per cent) are in Stopsley the most common type of household space in Stopsley was semi-detached with 52.9 per cent, followed by and almost equal number of terraced and detached with 19.5 and 17.8 per cent respectively (ii) over 80 per cent of the households in Stopsley are owned; 40.4 per cent outright and 39.6 per cent with a mortgage (iii) Stopsley has low levels of social rented households in Luton with seven per cent (iv) the average three bedroom house in Luton in October 2018, cost £280,000 compared to £298,000 in Stopsley (v) the proportion of overcrowding is 5.5 per cent, significantly lower than the average in Luton (vi) August 2018: Health Stopsley had a lower level of low birth weights over a five year period with 7.9 per cent, Luton’s average was 9.1 per cent (vii) in the 2011 census, the percentage of people who self-reported bad or very bad health in Stopsley was 4.7 per cent (as a percentage of the total number of people who responded to this question) (viii) younger children of reception age had a higher than average level of obesity with 11.7 per cent; older children and adults were about the same as Luton’s average (ix) the average life expectancy in Luton for females is 82.4 and male 78.5; Stopsley was higher with 84.6 and 80.6 respectively (x) the highest number of deaths recorded in Stopsley was cancer followed by circulatory disease (xi) April 2018: Demographics (xii) Stopsley ward is located in the east of the borough the population, based on mid-year estimate 2016, was just short of 7,100, accounting for 3.3 per cent of Luton’s population Stopsley has a substantially higher number of individuals aged over 45 accounting for 49.7 per cent of the wards population, compared to Luton’s 33.4 per cent 3 of 27 Stopsley ward profile v4.0 – April2019 Population (xiii) the white (British, Scottish, N. Irish, Welsh) population of Stopsley accounts for 79.3 per cent, compared to Luton’s average of 44.6 per cent the second highest proportion of those living in Stopsley are Irish with 3.6% per cent Deprivation (xiv) 2015 indices of multiple deprivation shows that the northern half of Stopsley is in the top 10 to 20 per cent least deprived and most of the southern part in the top 20 to 50 per cent most deprived nationally the percentage of children living in poverty after housing costs is 20 to 25 per cent Economic activity Stopsley has a higher proportion of economically active individuals than the average in Luton with 81.9 per cent (xv) it has a low proportion of elementary occupations such as sales, customer services and machinery operatives, accounting for 26.5 compared to Luton’s average of 36.1 per cent there were 55 people claiming unemployment benefit in Stopsley at the start if 2018; a rate of 1.3% per cent (xvi) Crime (xvii) during 2016 and 2017, there were 75 incidents of burglaries reported in Stopsley in the same year, there were 403 incidents of ASB, 10 reports of hate crime Stopsley had a fairly low level of fly tipping incidents in comparison to the rest of the town with 102 incidents Perceptions of Luton (xviii) From wave 2 of the perceptions survey, it was identified that: 53 per cent of Stopsley’s population were satisfied with Luton as a place to live only 27 per cent felt the image of Luton had improved in the past 12 months 87 per cent of the residents agreed that their
