Citizen Planning School: Idea Summit One Region Forward and the UB School of Architecture and Planning will be hosting an Idea Summit on Saturday, October 4 at 10am at the North Park Theater at 1428 Hertel Ave. This event will acknowledge the work of all of our Citizen Planners and Champions for Change, explore what it means to translate ideas into action, and provide opportunities for community members to network with local experts, the citizen planners, funders and other attendees to generate more ideas for action. Buffalo Green Code: Please send your comments by October 6, 2014 Over the past few months, Mayor Brown has released public drafts for key components of the Buffalo Green Code, including the Unified Development Ordinance (UDO), Local Waterfront Revitalization Program (LWRP), and three Brownfield Opportunity Area (BOA) studies (Buffalo River Corridor, Buffalo Harbor, and Tonawanda Street Corridor). Comments from many public meetings will be included in revisions. "Climate Change and the Future of Food" "Climate Change and the Future of Food" is the title of a presentation to be given on October 10 at University at Buffalo, South Campus by Dr. David Walter Wolfe, a prominent climate scientist from Cornell University. Dr. Wolfe, is a Professor of Plant and Soil Ecology in the Department of Horticulture at Cornell University. He has worked and published extensively in the area of agriculture and climate change. Dr. Wolfe's presentation will be followed by a Q&A session, and a casual reception soon after. New York Battery Energy Storage Technology Symposium The New York Battery Energy Storage Technology Symposium (NY-BEST) will be held November 5, 2014 at the Adam's Mark Hotel and Conference Center, Buffalo. Northeast Sustainable Agriculture Working Group Conference: It Takes a Region Our 2014 It Takes a Region conference will be held November 11-12 at the Saratoga Hilton in Saratoga Springs, NY. Plentiful Partnership of Niagara- Gleaning Volunteers Needed Plentiful Partnership of Niagara (PPN) is a collaborative effort among Cornell Cooperative Extension of Niagara County (CCE), the Food Bank of WNY, Niagara Community Action Program, Inc. (NICAP), Niagara County farmers, and area institutions. PPN aims to reduce food insecurity, alleviate hunger, keep Niagara County produce local, and connect local farmers to area distribution systems. PPN seeks volunteers for upcoming field and market gleans. Creating Healthy Places to Live, Work, and Play (CHP), a New York State Department of Health grant and CCE program, formed the foundation for PPN with an emphasis on access to healthy food. Each year, produce is left in the fields to waste or is discarded prematurely, either due to cosmetic imperfections or the absence of an alternative outlet. In Niagara County 99,935 pounds of produce, on average, go to waste each season (based on reporting from eight farms across the county). CHP is working to increase the local harvest and reduce waste, by working with area farmers and distributors, to better connect produce with those who need it. The food insecurity rate is 17.2% in Niagara County. PPN provides an opportunity to increase community consumption of local fruits and vegetables and reduce food insecurity. Over 150 totes (or 7,500 pounds) of produce have been collected since the onset of PPN, in April of 2014, and distributed to over 47,892 Niagara County residents.
