PENNDESIGN ARCHITECTURE 602 MASTER LECTURE THORSTEN HELBIG Co-founder & Managing Partner, Knippers Helbig Advanced Engineering FORM:FREI Traversing the frontier between architecture and engineering form:frei is an exploration of the ‘Freiraum’ (free space) between architecture and engineering, design and fabrication, research and practice. This exploration is driven by curiosity and an openness to explore traditional and ‘new’ materials and understand their inherent characteristics to discover new applications for innovative architecture. The most fascinating discoveries are enabled by a disciplined intelligence about available technologies and a wide range of materials, from timber to granite to fiber-reinforced polymers and ceramics. The engineer’s perspective on breaking away from the traditional, linear design process and entering more dynamic forms of interaction in a highly specialized and unrestrained collaborative environment will be presented. Helbig is Co-founder and Managing Partner at Knippers Helbig Advanced Engineering with more than 25 years of working experience. In 2001 he founded “Knippers Helbig Advanced Engineering” in Stuttgart. In 2009 the firm founded an office in New York City where Thorsten is the managing partner. Under Helbig’s supervision Knippers Helbig has become one of the leading engineering firms for innovative specialty structures and facades. Helbig frequently collaborates with partners in the international architectural scene as well as market leaders in the building industry including Renzo Piano, Massimiliano Fuksas, Diller Scofidio + Renfro, Seele, and Gartner, among others. Since 2018, Helbig is teaching as an Associate Professor at the Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture at Cooper Union, NYC - focusing on the interface between architecture, engineering and fabrication technology. OPEN TO ALL STUDENTS AND FACULTY WED 13 FEBRUARY, 2:00 PM 02.13 Meyerson Hall, Lower Gallery University of Pennsylvania School of Design | 210 South 34th Street | Philadelphia, PA 19104 .
