Appendix J STREET CROSS SECTIONS AND APPROVED STREET NAME SUFFIXES Approved Street Name Suffixes Standard Name Description and Stipulations Abbreviation Alleys are public servitudes which generally run behind lots and provide service to homes and businesses, or are otherwise Alley ALY short streets narrower than the standard width. This suffix is generally not used for new streets except in exceptional circumstances. A road or thoroughfare that serves through traffic, or Avenue AVE ingress/egress traffic within a subdivision or subdivisions. This suffix may only be used for east-west oriented streets. A through street; can also be an entrance roadway for a larger subdivision. These roads contain a landscaped central Boulevard BLVD reservation and a minimum of four through traffic lanes. Roadways of this description are required to use this suffix per the Unified Development Code. A side street which has both termini on the same road, Circle CIR creating a loop or crescent. Short dead end street which terminates in a cul-de-sac. Court CT Recommended length is 600 feet or less. A road or thoroughfare that serves through traffic, or Drive DR ingress/egress traffic within a subdivision or subdivisions. This suffix may only be used for north-south oriented streets. Highway HWY Reserved suffix for State-maintained roads only. Minor street within a subdivision which may or may not be a Lane LN dead-end. A side street which has both termini on the same road, Loop LOOP creating a loop or crescent. Place PL Short dead end street which terminates in a cul-de-sac. A thoroughfare designated as a major street. These roadways Parkway PKWY should include a median or central reservation. A thoroughfare serving primarily rural areas, with a length Road RD greater than one-half mile in length. A road or thoroughfare that serves through traffic or continues Street ST across several subdivisions. A major street with a minimum of four through traffic lanes Thruway THWY and a dedicated central reservation. A side street within an older neighborhood. This suffix is Walk WALK generally not used for new streets except in exceptional circumstances. Minor street within a subdivision which may or may not be a Way WAY dead-end.
