Tottenhamendured a poor start to the season, tumblingto 14thplace, but most supporters expected himto turnthings around. Nor has his reputationfor arrogance, hostility—he once gouged anopposingmanager inthe eye—and spectacular downfalls. Thoughmost ofhis tenures have started withgreat success, includingleague titles infour different countries and two Champions League trophies, theyhave usuallyended acrimoniously.

Most Manchester United fans were relieved whenthe club sacked him11 months ago. Mr Mourinho certainlybelieves he will.

But he remains as self-confident as ever. The problemis younever understood that. But willthe Humble One actuallyprod Tottenhamto perform at a higher levelthantheir talented players ought to reach? And those who have overachieved at their last club have about the same chance as a coinflip ofdoingso intheir next job. One group ofDutchacademics found that clubs whichendure suchroughpatches tend to come throughthem, regardless ofwhether theychange their coach. Mr Mourinho mayreceive plentyofcredit just for gettingSpurs to returnto their usuallydominant selves, whenMr Pochettino might also have overseensucha turnaround.

Because footballteams so Jose Mourinho:SpecialLeadership:Creatingand ManagingSuccessfulTeams go throughups and downs—and chairmenfire their coaches withsuchregularity—measuringlong-termmanagerialperformance is tricky. After anuneventfulcareer as a midfielder across Portugal's footballpyramidMourinho first entered the sphere ofmanagement as aninterpreter for Sir BobbyRobsonat SportingCP and Portobefore gainingsuccess as anassistant Jose Mourinho:SpecialLeadership:Creatingand ManagingSuccessfulTeams Barcelona under bothRobsonand his successor, Louis vanGaal.

That success earned hima move to England withChelsea inwhere he wontwo Premier League titles, a FA Cupand two League Cups inhis three seasons at the club, before he departed inamid reports ofdisagreements withclub owner RomanAbramovich. Mourinho left RealMadrid into rejoinChelsea, where he wonanother league title and League Cupbut was dismissed inafter a poor runofresults. Mourinho wanted to follow in his father's footsteps and joined the Belenenses youthteam.

Graduatingto the senior level, he played at Rio Ave where his father was coachBelenenses, and Sesimbra. He lacked the requisite pace and power to become a professionaland chose to focus onJose Mourinho:SpecialLeadership:Creatingand ManagingSuccessfulTeams a football coachinstead.

Later he accepted the positionofassistant manager at Estrela da Amadora[22] thenwas a scout at Ovarense. Then, inanopportunityarose to work as a translator for a top foreigncoach:BobbyRobsonhad beenappointed as the new manager ofLisbonclub SportingCP and needed an English-speakinglocalcoachto work as his interpreter. Mourinho begandiscussingtactics and coachingwithRobsoninhis interpretingrole. WhenPorto appointed himas their head coach, Mourinho moved withhim, continuingto coachand interpret for players at the new club.

After two years at Porto, the duo moved again, joiningBarcelona inRobsonand Mourinho's styles complemented eachother:the Englishman favoured anattackingstyle, while Mourinho covered defensive options, and the Portuguese's love ofplanningand trainingcombined Jose Mourinho:SpecialLeadership:Creatingand ManagingSuccessfulTeams Robson's direct man-management.

The Barcelona attack was led bya prime Ronaldo — whomMourinho regards as the best player post-Diego Maradona. One ofthe most important things I learnt fromBobbyRobsonis that whenyouwin, youshouldn't assume youare the team, and whenyoulose, youshouldn't think youare rubbish. He beganworkingwithRobson's successor, Louis vanGaaland he learned muchfromthe Dutchman's conscientious style. Both assistant and head coachcombined their studious approachto the game and Barcelona wonLa Liga twice inVanGaal's first two years as coach.

He let Mourinho develop his ownindependent coachingstyle and entrusted himwiththe coachingduties ofBarcelona B. The chance to become a top-tier manager arrived inSeptember whenMourinho moved up fromhis role as assistant manager at Benfica to replace manager Jupp Heynckes after the fourthweek ofthe Primeira Liga.

TellBenfica iftheywant a first-teamcoachyouwillgo; iftheywant anassistant youwillstay. Mourinho was highlycriticalofFerreira, whomhe had first encountered as his teacher at ISEF and later lambasted the veterancoachbystating, "This could be the storyofa donkeywho worked for 30 years but never became a horse.

Suchwas Robson's desperationfor Mourinho to joinhimhe offered to step downafter two years Jose Mourinho:SpecialLeadership:Creating and ManagingSuccessfulTeams charge and hand over the reins to Mourinho. Mourinho turned the offer downand said he knew Robsonwould never step downat the club he loved. Mourinho and Mozer proved a popular combination, enjoyinga 3—0 winagainst rivals SportingCP in December.

He left the club on5 December [35] after just nine league games incharge. Uponlater reflection, Vilarinho rued his poor judgement and expressed his frustrationat losingMourinho:. Onlylater I realised that one's personalityand pride cannot be put before the interest ofthe institutionwe serve. After a 1—1 draw against Santa Clara on20 JanuaryMourinho recorded eight matches unbeateninthe league sixwins, two draws since 25 November Mourinho guided the teamto third place that year after a stronggame runincluding11 wins and gave the Jose Mourinho:Special Leadership:Creatingand ManagingSuccessfulTeams of"makingPorto champions next year".

He recalled captainJorge Costa after a six-monthloanto CharltonAthletic. Duringthe pre-season, Mourinho put detailed reports ofthe team trainingonthe club website. The physicaland combative abilities ofthe teams' defenders and midfielders allowed Porto to applypressure fromthe offensive lines and forced opponents either to concede the ballor trylonger, uncertainpasses.

InMourinho wonhis first Primeira Liga witha 27—5—2 record, 11 points clear ofBenfica, the teamhe quit two years earlier. The totalof86 points out ofthe possible maximumofwas a Portuguese record, untilthe —16 seasonwonbyBenfica 88 pointssince the rule ofthree points per winwas introduced.

The followingJose Mourinho:SpecialLeadership:Creatingand ManagingSuccessfulTeams witnessed further successes:he led Porto to victoryin the one-matchPortuguese Super CupbeatingLeiria 1—0. The teamwas dominant inthe Primeira Liga and finished the seasonwitha perfect home record, aneight-point advantage, and anunbeatenrunthat onlyended against GilVicente ; theysecured the title five weeks before the end ofthe season. Mourinho flamboyantlycelebrated the goalbyleavinghis dugout, fists punchingthe air as he sprinted downthe sideline near to his celebratingplayers — this dramatic celebrationis regarded as the moment whenMourinho announced himselfto the game.

Inafter Chelsea clinched the Premier League title, Fergusonhad his players forma guard ofhonour at Chelsea's next game at Old Trafford, Jose Mourinho:SpecialLeadership:Creatingand ManagingSuccessfulTeams a favour that Mourinho returned inat Stamford Bridge after Ferguson's squad were confirmed league champions.

Liverpoolare a teamthat interests everyone and Chelsea does not interest me so muchbecause it is a new project withlots ofmoneyinvested init. I think it is a project which, ifthe club failto wineverything, then[Roman] Abramovichcould retire and take the moneyout ofthe club. It's an uncertainproject. It is interestingfor a coachto have the moneyto hire qualityplayers but younever know ifa project like this willbringsuccess. Please don't callme arrogant, but I'mEuropeanchampionand I think I'ma specialone.

This comment resulted inthe media dubbinghim"The SpecialOne". He retained Steve Clarkea long-servingformer player at Chelsea, who had also performed anassistant managerial-type role under previous managers at the club. Under Mourinho, Chelsea built onthe potentialdeveloped inthe previous season. The —07 seasonsaw growingmedia speculationthat Mourinho would leave the club at the season's conclusion, due to alleged poor relations withowner Roman Abramovichand a power struggle withsportingdirector Frank Arnesenand Abramovichadvisor Piet de Visser.

Mourinho later cleared doubts regardinghis future at Stamford Bridge, statingthat there would onlybe two ways Jose Mourinho:Special Leadership:Creatingand ManagingSuccessfulTeams himto leave Chelsea:ifChelsea were not to offer hima new contract inJuneand ifChelsea were to sack him. The signingofUkrainianstriker AndriyShevchenko inthe summer offor a club record fee would Jose Mourinho:Special Leadership:Creatingand ManagingSuccessfulTeams prove to be a point ofcontentionbetweenMourinho and Abramovich.

Chelsea had attempted to signShevchenko inthe precedingtwo years but Milanrebuffed Abramovich's interest inhim. Shevchenko's first season at Chelsea was viewed as a major disappointment bythe Chelsea fans, as he onlyscored four league goals and 14 inallcompetitions.

Shevchenko's strike partner, Didier Drogba, had the highest scoringseasonofhis career that year and this led Shevchenko to be dropped fromthe startingline-up towards the end ofthe seasonbyMourinho. Notably, inthe Champions League semi-finalmatchagainst Liverpoolat AnfieldShevchenko was not evenincluded onthe bench. Abramovich's insistence onMourinho playingthe Ukrainianwas widelyviewed as a further source offrictionbetweenthe two men.

The possibility, however, ofthe quadruple was brought to anend on1 MaywhenLiverpooleliminated Chelsea fromthe Champions League on penalties at Anfield, followinga 1—1 aggregate draw.

This was Mourinho's first seasonwithout a league title wininfive years. This was his first FA Cup winwhichmeant that he had wonevery domestic trophyavailable to a Premier League manager. There was, however, to be further frictionbetweenMourinho and Abramovichwhen AvramGrant was appointed as director offootball, despite objections fromMourinho.

Grant's positionwas further enhanced bybeinggivena seat onthe board. Grant's squad managed to reachthe finalofthe Champions League somethingMourinho failed to achieve in his three years at Chelseareachthe finalofthe League Cup and maintained the unbeatenhome streak at Stamford Bridge.

Grant's Chelsea also finished second inthe Premier League. On2 JuneMourinho was appointed the successor ofRoberto Manciniat Inter Milan ona three-year contract, and brought alongwithhimmuchofhis backroomstaffwho had served himat bothChelsea and Porto.

Inhis first seasonas Inter head coach, Mourinho wonthe Supercoppa ItalianabeatingRoma onpenalties, Jose Mourinho:SpecialLeadership: Creatingand ManagingSuccessfulTeams and finished top ofSerie A. Despite his domestic successes inwinningthe Scudetto bya point margin, Mourinho's first seasoninItalywas viewed as disappointingbysome Inter fans, as the club failed to improve onthe performances ofhis predecessor Roberto Manciniinthe Champions League.

Inter put ina series oflacklustre group stage performances that included a shock 1—0 home loss to Panathinaikos and anawaydraw withCypriot minnows Anorthosis Famagusta.

Inter qualified, however, for the knockout stages ofthe Champions League but failed to make it to the quarter-finals after beingdefeated by Manchester United. SeeingMourinho for the first time, charmingthe cameras withhis grandiose statements and coquettishmisinformation, was a feelingI canonlylikento seeingyour next nightmare ex across a crowded room. Ofcourse, he was always offto Chelsea — the appointment was a perfect synergybetweenclub and manager, money and ambition, manand moment.

The name, the locale, and the recently-acquired big-stage clout allsuited this former PE teacher fromSetubalto a tee. Evenmore excitinglyfor me, he was signingsome ofhis successfulPorto players, includingindomitable centraldefender Ricardo Carvalho. He also acquired Didier Drogba, the butcher of Marseille, and a youngDutchmancalled ArjenRobbenwho was supposed to be quite good. Mourinho soonset about Englishfootballlike the Red ArmymarchingthroughSmolensk. Drogba failed to convince inhis debut season, Mateja Kezmanwas useless and the footballwas about as liquid as a Calippo at the bottomofa Londis fridge. However, the tenacityand physicalityofthat teamwas near-impossible to best. He was, quite simply, onone. Lookingback at it allnow, it was some time to be a year-old Chelsea supporter, yet its legacyis hard to contend withnow the dust has settled and the game has changed. That season, that brand offootballand that wayoflookingat the game would never leave me.

Because it was so potent, because it happened at suchanimpressionable time inmylife, it formed the basis ofmyfootballunderstanding, evenas that became more ofa minorityview.
