Slack is a messaging application that can be used for real-time conversations like instant messenger or asynchronous conversations like e-mail. It also has many other useful features such as app integrations, file sharing, and group chat. Best Practices • Treat this like any other UCSF communications tool. • Employ the PRIDE values: Professionalism | Respect | Integrity | Diversity | Excellence • Do NOT share private or secure information such as HIPAA or PHI data. What are the benefits of Slack? • Quick & efficient messaging • Works off-campus; no need to log into VPN • Community building • App integration (zoom, box, outlook, etc. can be use w/in Slack) How do I interact with Slack • Desktop app: Best practice is to have the desktop app downloaded and open on your desktop at all times • Mobile app: for on the go Slacking • Browser: use this only to set up your account How is this any different from Skype or other messaging programs? Other platforms primarily serve person-to-person text communication; this one features group chat areas called channels. You’ll automatically be placed in these two: • #everyone-work-related • #everyone--fun Ways to Message: • Channels – are group chats • Direct Messages – private correspondence What Are Channels? Channels are group chats. Click on the word Channels and you will see all the other public channels available, join any that pique your interest. • Open channels have a hashtag in front of them • Private channels have a lock in front of them #everyone-fun- A casual place to converse about general work-related topics. Everyone is automatically placed into this channel once they join the group #everyone-work-related - Everyone is automatically placed into this channel once upon joining Messages in this channel should be submitted through Amy Murtha, Connie Yu, Wendy Turner You can very easily set up other channels for more focused discussions. You can even set up private channels that can only be seen by those who have been invited to join. Attaching files You can upload files to individuals via Direct Message, or to Channels • #1 – click paperclip icon • #2 – navigate to the file on your computer or in Box Files can be accessed in Channels or in Direct Message Conversations by clicking the Gear icon and choosing to view Channel or Conversation Details The Basics: • Set your Status • Add a profile picture • Set up your notification preferences • Explore the channels • Search for something • Upload a file For more tips and other popular topics, please visit: https://slack.com/help .
