Administrative Information Acquisition Information Transfer from Library of Congress, Gift and Exchange Program, 1987. Provenance The collection was formed from submissions made to the Library of Congress for copyright purposes and originally consisted of 5,064 photomechanical prints of artworks by approximately 500 American and European artists. The prints were deposited with the Library of Congress Copyright Office between 1890 and 1945 and were later transferred to LC's Prints and Photographs Division. In 1987, through its Gift and Exchange Program, the Library of Congress transferred the images to the Photograph Archives of the National Museum of Art (now the Smithsonian American Art Museum). Separated Materials In 2001, as part of a Smithsonian American Art Museum office relocation move, 2,729 prints by European artists were separated from the collection and transferred to the J. Paul Getty Museum's Photograph Archives. Processing Information In 1990, with the support of a Smithsonian Institution Womens' Committee grant, a basic inventory of the collection was made. The collection was processed and cataloged at the item level by Rachel Brooks, 2013-2015.
