From 2000, when he defeated Garry Kasparov, until 2007 he was World Chess Champion. He has significantly shaped opening theory in chess and is still a top player today, participating in the Candidates Tournament in 2018 (the winner will be the challenger of Magnus Carlsen at the World Chess Championship 2018).
