VISVA-BHARATI Annual Report 2017-2018 Santiniketan 2018 YATRA VISVAM BHAVATYEKANIDAM (Where the World makes its home in a single nest) “ Visva-Bharati represents India where she has her wealth of mind which is for all. Visva-Bharati acknowledges India's obligation to offer to others the hospitality of her best culture and India's right to accept from others their best ” -Rabindranath Tagore Dee®ee³e& MeebefleefveJesÀleve - 731235 Þeer vejsbê ceesoer efkeMkeYeejleer SANTINIKETAN - 731235 efpe.keerjYetce, heefM®ece yebieeue, Yeejle ACHARYA (CHANCELLOR) VISVA-BHARATI DIST. SABUJKOLI SEN jkeervêveeLe þeJegÀj FOUNDED BY RABINDRANATH TAGORE FOREWORD meb./No._________________ efoveebJeÀ/Date._________________ For Rabindranath Tagore, the University was the most vibrant part of a nation’s cultural and educational life. In his desire to fashion a holistic self that was culturally, ecologically and ethically enriched, he saw Visva-Bharati as a utopia of the cross cultural encounter. During the course of the last year, the Visva-Bharati fraternity has been relentlessly pursuing this dream. The recent convocation, where the Chancellor Shri Narendra Modi graced the occasion has energized the Univer- sity community, especially because this was the Acharya’s visit after 10 years. Tagore stood as a colossus across Bengal and the inauguration of the Bangladesh Bhavana in the presence of the two Prime Ministers was an occasion for great celebration, where the University acted as an ambassador between two neighbouring countries. We sincerely hope that Bangladesh Bhavana will continue to take this role forward. Similarly, Cheena Bhavana and Nippon Bhavana have enriched India’s cross cultural encounter and Visva-Bharati is proud of their efforts. A series of exchange programmes and conferences organized by these departments have added sheen to the University. Sriniketan has acted as a bridge between the University and the community and many of Tagore’s ideas have found resonance in the programmes of Swacch Bharat and Unnat Bharat. This year, Sriniketan has adoped 50 more villages thereby taking Tagore’s dream forward. Awareness programmes on womens’ issues and social evils have taken Visva-Bharati’s social responsibility to greater heights. Kala Bhavana and Sangit Bhavana are soon to complete a hundred years of existence. Both are widely recognized and the faculty and students will no doubt continue to bring international acclaim to the University. Life at Visva-Bharati has been rich and fulfilling with a glut of academic programmes, cultural events and the usual festivals that have become an integral part of national culture. In its attempt to be environmentally more responsible, various policies were revamped during the Poush Mela. The faculty and students have attained awards and distinctions and have made their presence felt both in the national and international spheres. We shall soon embark on the 150th Birth Celebrations of the ‘Father of the Nation’, Mahatma Gandhi. Given his close association with Gurudev and Santiniketan, we shall celebrate the occasion in a befitting manner throughout the year. As with every organization there have been some problems that Visva-Bharati has faced. Meanwhile, let us pledge to serve with humility this august institution of national importance.
