^ For immediate Release LACMA AND THE LOS ANGELES JAZZ SOCIETY PRESENT L.A. JAZZ TREASURE AWARD TO Gerald Wilson (Los Angeles, August 28, 2012)—The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) and the Los Angeles Jazz Society are proud to present living jazz legend Gerald Wilson with the fourth annual L.A. Jazz Treasure Award on Friday, September 7, 2012. As part of the museum’s venerable Jazz at LACMA series, the concert will feature the Anthony Wilson Nonet jazz ensemble. Anthony Wilson, a Grammy-nominated guitar player, is also the son of Gerald Wilson, the evening’s honoree. Opening the evening will be special guest performer and saxophonist Max Lesser, winner of the L.A. Jazz Society Shelly Manne Memorial New Talent Award. Throughout his career, Gerald Wilson has received noteworthy accolades, including winning the Downbeat International Critics Poll as both a composer/arranger and for his big band, and winning the Paul Robeson Award, the NEA American Jazz Masters Fellowship, and a pair of American Jazz Awards. He has been elected to the Mississippi Jazz Hall of Fame, has had his life's work archived by the Library of Congress, and has earned six Grammy nominations. “Starting with one of the first great big bands, Jimmie Lunceford in the 1930s through his work with the Duke Ellington and Count Basie bands, and then with his own big band, Gerald’s life parallels the finest in jazz,” says Mitch Glickman, director of music programs at LACMA. “We are honored to recognize his indelible contribution to jazz and to the countless great musicians he has fostered over the decades.” Celebrating its twenty-first season, Jazz at LACMA features Southern California’s finest musicians. The free concert series has presented such legendary artists as Ernie Andrews, Red Holloway, Bill Holman Big Band, and the Dave Pell Octet, along with award-winning artists including Billy Childs, John Clayton, Peter Erskine, Les McCann, Ernie Watts, and Wayne Shorter. Jazz at LACMA runs each year from April through November and is supported by KJAZZ 88.1 FM. Broadcasts of the concert series may be heard every Sunday 7–9 pm on KJAZZ and is made possible through the support of the office of Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky.
