Together with the Aramco Houston Half Marathon and the ABB 5K, these races mark the city’s largest weekend sporting event, attracting some of the world’s best competitors and over 30,000 runners. The residents of the City of Houston will be cheering you on as you make your way from Congress Street, through Rice Village and the Galleria, along Memorial Drive and into downtown. As the title sponsor for the past 11 years, it has been our privilege to sound the starting gun and hold the tape at the finish line. These races could not happen without the efforts of more than 7,500 volunteers who have contributed their time and energy throughout the year to make race day a success. Their tireless dedication is essential to delivering such a grand event. Additionally, the ‘Run for a Reason’ charity program that is supported by thousands of runners, fundraisers and donors, benefits over 60 Houston-area charities. In 2015, more than 19,000 donations were made, resulting in $2.5 million being raised during the year. The ‘Run for a Reason’ charity program has surpassed the $23 million fundraising mark since its inception in 1995. Your commitment and determination in taking on the challenge of a marathon serve as an inspiration to our community. On behalf of the people of Chevron, I applaud you for everything that has brought you to this moment – your time, perseverance and training – and I will continue my applause as you cross the finish line. Sincerely, Jeff Shellebarger President, Chevron North America Exploration & Production 2 2016 CHEVRON HOUSTON MARATHON WELCOME TO HOUSTON The Houston Marathon Committee welcomes you to the forty-fourth annual Chevron Houston Marathon and its companion races, the Aramco Houston Half Marathon and the ABB 5K. This year, more runners than ever will be able to run the marathon and half marathon because two years of experience with our 2014 course revisions have confirmed that our Committee can safely add 2,000 total slots. On the professional running front, the Chevron Houston Marathon will maintain its tradition of an impressive international field, while the Aramco Houston Half Marathon will boast a fully international field for only the third time since 2006. We are especially eager to see how the international professionals perform on what is clearly a very speedy half marathon course after an amazing 76 Americans achieving U.S. Olympic Trials Marathon qualifying times last year on that course. In sum, our 2016 races will be the best opportunity yet for the elite athletes to rewrite the record books. The ABB 5K is now in its fourth year as the leadoff race of the weekend, and its second year of a great new start line immediately adjacent to Discovery Green. More than a third of the participants in the ABB 5K will also line up on Sunday morning so that they can add the “Houston Double” medal to their collection. One last item that might interest readers is that our Committee was recently presented with the prestigious 2015 Green Award by the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races for our efforts in promoting the environmental sustainability of our races. We hope that all of our participants, volunteers and spectators appreciate our efforts in this area, and will help us achieve ever-higher levels of ecological stewardship. Reduce, reuse and recycle! Please help us in thanking all of our sponsors by using and promoting their products and services whenever possible. We also thank the City of Houston, the City of West University Place and their respective departments and agencies for allowing us to use their streets and other public accommodations. Our events would not exist without all of their valuable contributions. Finally, we thank you for participating in, volunteering for or simply cheering on the runners at all of the weekend’s races. In particular, we thank the runners for showing their confidence in our ability to host a series of world-class races. See you at the finish line!
