A provi- sion in the bill authorizes $5 Billion to be paid to unions, state public employee systems and big corporations to subsidize health care coverage for early retirees. The law created the “Early Retiree Reinsurance Pro- gram” and called on it to spend a total of $5 billion between June 2010 and December 2013, when the na- tional health care exchanges are schedule to go into effect. This program is meant to help corporations, states and unions pay for health insurance for their employees who retire before they are eligible for Medi- care. Between June 1, 2010 and the end of the year it paid out about $535 million, but the rate of payments has increased dramatically in 2011 and at the current rate the $5 billion will be exhausted long before the end of the program and the Dems and their supporters will be back asking for more. This sounds very much like the plan that Hillary Clinton offered to business and unions to win their support when she was trying to insti- tute national health care during her husband’s administration Where did the money go in 2010? United Auto Workers, $207 million; AT&T, $140 million; Verizon, $92 million; GE, (who paid no taxes last year on billions of earnings) $37 million; and General Motors, $19 million. Large sums were also paid to state governments including: Ohio, $71 million, Teachers Retirement in Texas, $68 million; CalPERS, $58 million; Georgia, $58 million; and New York, $48 million. Other unions receiving funds include United Food and Commercial Workers, United Mine Workers and the Teamsters. Maybe now these unions will have more money to contribute to the campaigns of Democrat candidates. Republican lawmakers were unable to get information on this program until they won control of the House. I wonder how many other little goodies are in the legislation as a payoff to those who supported the passage of this bill.
