Who was Nat Turner? What was the outcome of that rebellion? Throughout the colonial era of American history, as well as the early history of the United States, laws known as slave codes were in place. The slave codes were laws which established the status of slaves in society, as well as the rights that owners had in regards to those slaves. The slave codes varied from state to state, but many of the laws were quite similar. For example, most states had a law regarding how it was determined whether someone was, or was not a slave. Generally, it was ruled that “the child followed the condition of the mother”. This meant that if the mother was a slave, then the child was also a slave. If the mother was free, then the child would be free as well. Other laws regarded abuse between master and slave. A Virginia law from 1705 stated that if a master killed his slave while in the process of punishing him, the master would be free of punishment. Meanwhile, a Louisiana law from 1724 stated if a slave struck his master hard enough to produce a bruise or draw blood, then death was an appropriate punishment. In some states, slaves were forbidden from leaving their owner’s property without being accompanied by a white person. Additionally, any slave caught attempting to run away could be subjected to the death penalty. Slaves were also prohibited from possessing weapons. Someone caught trying to harbor runaway slaves could be fined up to $1,000 or incarcerated for a year. ©Reading Through History Page 1 Name__________________________ It was the harsh nature and severity of the slave codes that eventually prompted Nat Turner to take action. Turner was born a slave on October 2, 1800. He lived in Southampton County, Virginia. At a young age, he became deeply religious and preached to his fellow slaves who called him “The Prophet”. He earned this nickname because he claimed to have visions which he believed were messages from God. He became convinced that God had instructed him to slay his enemies with their own weapons. Turner began planning a rebellion against slave owners. He recruited the assistance of other slaves, and they began orchestrating their efforts to revolt. On August 21st, 1831, he and his followers began their uprising. They moved from house to house, using knives, axes, hatchets, and other blunt objects to attack those inside. The group killed indiscriminately, murdering men, women, and children. The only homes that were spared were those of poor whites. The rebellion only lasted two days, but before they could be stopped, Turner and his followers killed sixty people. Fifty-six suspects were apprehended and executed for their participation in the revolt. White mobs also killed another two hundred blacks, simply out of fear and hysteria. Nat Turner eluded capture for more than two months. He was eventually captured and placed on trial for “conspiring to rebel and making insurrection”. He was found guilty and sentenced to death. He was hanged on November 11, 1831. After his hanging, his body was then skinned, beheaded, and quartered. Turner remains a controversial figure to this day. Some view him as a hero for standing up against slavery. They claim he made slave owners suffer for the hardships they had inflicted upon so many. Others argue that Turner was a blood-thirsty fanatic. They suggest that the murder of women and children, done at his command, is inexcusable and unforgivable.
