Sunday, November 6: Casablanca Welcome to Morocco! Ancient, modern, rugged, and beautiful, Morocco is a land of contrasts. We’ll wander through bustling medinas, take in the aromatic smells of the spice markets and journey through the desert aboard a camel! From stunning riads (homes that were once the estates of the wealthiest citizens, converted into boutique hotels with multiple stories that center around an open-air courtyard or gardens), to the desert’s endless sky, your adventure will be an inspiring tale. An included transfer takes you to our hotel. Meet your Local Leader at a welcome meeting before dinner at Rick’s Café, a landmark designed to bring the legendary “Gin Joint” made famous by Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman in the classic movie Casablanca, to life in today’s city of the same name. Hotel: Hotel Mogador, Casablanca (Dinner) Monday, November 7: Casablanca, Meknes & Fes The first stop of the day will be the opulent Hassan II Mosque, the largest functioning mosque in Africa. Its 210-meter minaret, the world’s second tallest, is a Casablanca city landmark that juts over the ocean. Then it’s on to Meknes, which served as Morocco’s imperial capital in the 17th century. Here our Insider Expert takes us on a walking tour of the UNESCO-stamped ancient medina where you will see the famous Bab Mansour Gate and the Moulay Ismail Mausoleum. We end this wonderful day of touring at our first riad in Fes. Hotel: Riad Salam, Fes (Breakfast) Tuesday, November 8: Fes Today we explore the old city of Fes el Bali, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the largest preserved medieval sites in the world. This is a full-day walking tour around the Medina of Fes, and while you will be on your feet for at least five to six hours, this is one of the highlights of the whole trip and well worth a little weariness! Here, we uncover incredible stories of history and culture. Tonight, relaxation is in store for you during your home-cooked dinner of traditional pastille and tagine. (Breakfast, Dinner) Wednesday, November 9: Erfoud Today we travel west through spectacular scenery from olive groves and palm trees to cedar, pine and oak forests, changing landscapes of high plains to mountain ranges, to reach our destination, the Saharan oasis town of Erfoud, a city known as “The Door to the Desert”. Once at our Spa and Wellness Kasbah, a perfect place to relax and enjoy the moment situated among the dunes and palms, the evening is yours and the choices are many. From indoor and outdoor pools and saunas, to just lounging on the terrace and watching the stars, your sure to be able to relax and enjoy Hotel: Hotel Xaluca Erfoud, Erfoud (Breakfast) Thursday, November 10: Merzouga Hop into your four-wheel drive vehicle and make the 34-mile journey to Merzouga, a small Moroccan town in the Sahara Desert, near the Algerian border. It is known as the gateway to Erg Chebbi, a huge expanse of sand dunes north of town. Meet your cameleers who will guide you to your desert luxury camp. Riding a camel is a great way to experience your trek, but if you’d prefer, it’s possible to walk alongside the caravan on the sand for the hour journey. A sunset, Moroccan dinner and campfire await you at your tent. If you’re up for it, sleep out under the stars! Hotel: Merzouga Luxury Camp, Sahara (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner) Friday, November 11: Todra Gorge & Dades Valley We leave the desert and stop at Todra Gorge to snap some photos of its dramatic rock formations. This remote area of Morocco is an amazing place to discover on foot, but to do so you will need a moderate level of fitness and the relevant footwear and clothing for it. If trekking isn’t your thing, have no fear, there are plenty of other activities to do in the valley. Later, connect with a local family over tea and discuss life today in Morocco before heading to Dades. Hotel: Hotel Xaluca Dades, Dades (Breakfast) Saturday, November 12: Aït Benhaddou While traveling the “Road of 1,000 Kasbahs,” we will visit the historic Kasbah Amridil, one of Morocco’s grandest kasbahs. This living museum showcases traditional kasbah life over the centuries and made an appearance in the 1962 film Lawrence of Arabia. Then it’s off to Aït Benhaddou. This city’s sunsets are legendary, and our hotel’s rooftop terrace is one of the best viewing spots. Hotel: Riad Maktoub, Aït Benhaddou (Breakfast, Dinner) Sunday, November 13: Marrakesh Our adventure continues along high mountain roads to Marrakesh, one of the four former imperial cities, now a major economic center and home to mosques, palaces, and gardens. You will fall in love with this walled medieval city where you will have a rare opportunity to see an ancient medina embrace modernity. Tonight, sample pastries, olives and other specialties on a guided foodie and tasting tour. Hotel: Hotel Opera Plaza, Marrakech (Breakfast) Monday, November 14: Marrakesh Lunch today is at the Amal Association, a non-profit association dedicated to the empowerment of women through training in culinary skills and job placement. Choose your adventure this afternoon: a classic guided tour, a bike tour, or take in the sites from a horse-drawn carriage. (Breakfast, Lunch) Tuesday, November 15: Marrakesh Now it’s time to try our hands at cooking Moroccan fare. Learn the secrets of Moroccan cooking at La Maison Arabe, a world-renowned cooking workshop located right outside the city. The school is set in an organic kitchen garden, so participants can pick vegetables and herbs that they’ll use to season their delicious Moroccan tagine (dish). Enjoy your creations for lunch and spend the rest of the day exploring Marrakesh at leisure. Choose to immerse yourself in the enchanting atmosphere of Djemaa el-Fna, the city’s main square, where storytellers and magicians captivate passers by or maybe you would prefer touring the elegant Majorelle Garden?
