And that’s something Christian history can really help us with. A figure like Elizabeth Fry, who is remembered in the Church of England today, is inspirational. Basically, she was a deeply committed Christian whose faith led her to work tirelessly for prison reform. It was triggered by her horror at the conditions for women and children in Newgate prison, and her personal response was to offer help. And that led to a lifetime of campaigning, action and writing leading to real social change. In the same way, having seen the body of a boy who had frozen to death in Brighton, she established the first night shelter. Our increasingly divided culture needs us to be like her.
