Joint Press Release Start signal: bayernets and Open Grid Europe Commission Wertingen Compressor Station Munich / Essen, 17 December 2019. – bayernets GmbH has successfully completed the commissioning of the Wertingen compressor station in the area of Prettelshofen (in the district of Dillingen an der Donau). The compressor station was put into operation in the middle of December 2019. It is connected to a network node where the existing gas transmission pipelines “Nordumgehung München” (Amerdingen-Wertingen-Anwalting- Finsing-Schnaitsee) and “CEL” (Vohburg-Wertingen-Senden) converge. The transmission system operator bayernets GmbH (with 55 percent) and Open Grid Europe GmbH (with 45 percent) invested a total of 107 million euros in the construction of the compressor station, which consists of three electrically operated compressor units and has a total capacity of 33 megawatts. Both companies also have shareholdings in the gas pipeline “Nordumgehung München”. “The commissioning of the Wertingen compressor station was completed as scheduled at the end of 2019. This measure will further optimise the transmission system of bayernets and Open Grid Europe to cater for the increased capacity demand in Bavaria and Baden- Württemberg”, explains Dr. Matthias Jenn, Managing Director of bayernets GmbH. “The joint project strengthens the north-south transmission of gas in a future common market area and improves the connection of storage facilities in southern Germany and Austria. It thus makes a contribution to the security of supply, in particular in southern Germany”, states Dr. Thomas Hüwener, member of the management board at Open Grid Europe GmbH, underlining the importance of the station. This measure increases the transmission capacity of the existing pipeline system from approx. 600,000 m³/h to approx. 1,100,000 m³/h. The additional transmission capacity is needed above all for high transmission volumes when injecting and withdrawing gas volumes from the natural gas storage facilities and in the case of high gas demand in Baden-Württemberg. Recultivation work and the greening of the complressor station will be undertaken over the next months. Roads and paths will also be restored in close cooperation with the town of Wertingen.
