Position Summary: Responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining employee injury prevention interventions including safe patient handling assessments/training; staff/leadership training; program measurement; work site assessments; ergonomic assessments/training; and product/equipment evaluations. Provide injury evaluations/consultations and coordinating workers compensation case management with consultants/physicians, operational leaders, and insurance administrators. Tasks and Responsibilities: Essential Tasks: Percentage of Time: 1. Responsible for developing, implementing and maintaining the PNHS 50% safe patient handling program across the organization including but not limited to: patient handling risk identification and assessment; maintaining an adequate and appropriate supply of patient handling equipment; education/training of nurses and direct patient care employees; facilities remodels and construction projects; program evaluation; patient mobility assessment and decision making criteria; peer leader roles; incident analysis reviews; and safe patient handling policy. 2. Develop, maintain and provide education for all courses relating to safe 5% patient handling, ergonomics, and injury prevention. 3. Complete program evaluations including but not limited to: the safe 1-5% patient handling program, ergonomics, and other physical and psychosocial influences on work comp injuries and early return to work. 4. Act as primary case manager for employees requiring services under 30% workers’ compensation including but not limited to: injury assessments/recommendations; medical consultations/treatment; rehabilitation; return to work coordination; and restrictions/disability accommodations. 5. Coordinate ergonomic assessments, interventions and recommendations 5% including but not limited to: work site assessments, physical job demands analysis, job description development and review, product evaluations, and facilities re-models and new construction design. 6. Complete employee injury assessments and treatment recommendations in collaboration with the Employee Health Clinic physician for work and 5% non-work related injuries, according to the medical treatment plan including but not limited to: musculoskeletal evaluations, treatment recommendations/interventions to improve function, and consultation regarding work restrictions and medical specialty referrals. 7. Provides education to employees and leaders on employee health topics 1-5% including but not limited to: ADA; FMLA; wellness resources; and employee assistance. 8. Scope of Responsibility: (Typically in Exempt Jobs Only) Responsible for maintaining personal competency with applicable legal standards and regulations. Accountable for managing programs and assigned cases within budget for workers compensation and operational budgets. Supervision/Work Direction: Consulting and advising PNHS employees and organizational leadership. Internal/External Contacts: PNHS employees, consultants/physicians, operational leaders, attorneys and insurance administrators. Education/Experience: 1. Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Therapy or Physical Therapy. Master’s degree in Occupational Therapy or Physical Therapy preferred. 2. Minimum of 3 years experience demonstrating competence in the evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation and return to work case management of work related musculoskeletal injuries. 3. Experience conducting ergonomic assessments, job site analysis, safe patient handling risk assessments, product evaluations, and injury prevention program development, implementation, and training. Special Knowledge/Skills/Certifications/Licenses: 1. Licensed with the Minnesota Department of Health and the NBCOT as an Occupational or licensed with the Minnesota Board of Physical Therapy. 2. WorkWell/Isernhagen Functional Capacity Evaluation and Job Site Analysis certifications, preferred. Machines/Equipment/Software Utilized: PC, spreadsheet, word processing, Occupational Health Manager (OHM) database, telephone, fax, voicemail and pagers. Sedentary Work - Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally (Occasionally: activity or condition exists up to 1/3 of the time) and/or a negligible amount of force frequently (Frequently: activity or condition exists from 1/3 to 2/3 of the time) to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time, but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met. X Light Work - Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly (Constantly: activity or condition exists 2/3 or more of the time) to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Sedentary Work. Even though the weight lifted may be only a negligible amount, a job should be rated Light Work: (1) when it requires walking or standing to a significant degree; or (2) when it requires sitting most of the time but entails pushing and/or pulling of arm or leg controls; and/or (3) when the job requires working at a production rate pace entailing the constant pushing and/or pulling of materials even though the weight of those materials is negligible. NOTE: The constant stress and strain of maintaining a production rate pace, especially in an industrial setting, can be and is physically demanding of a worker even though the amount of force exerted is negligible. Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work. Heavy Work - Exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Medium Work. Very Heavy Work - Exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Heavy Work. Note: During any patient handling task, if any caregiver is required to lift more than 35 lbs. of a patient’s weight, assistive transfer devices should be used for the transfer.
