The Constitution of the College Democrats Article I — Name The name of this organization shall be the College Democrats, hereafter referred to as the Organization. The organization shall be affiliated with the Nebraska Democratic Party through the Nebraska Young Democrats. Article II — Purpose The purpose of this organization shall be to encourage participation in the Democratic Party, aid in the election of Democratic candidates, and to educate college students on issues relevant to the current political climate. Article Ill — Membership Section l. Regular membership in this organization shall be open to any Creighton University student who subscribes to the ideals of the organization. Article IV — Officers Section l. Officers of the organization shall be as follows, and will form the Executive Committee: - President - Vice President of Finance - Director of Social Media - Vice President of Public Relations - Director of Civic Engagement - Vice President of Recruitment Section 2. At such time when the organization feels it necessary to add more officers, it may be done with the unanimous consent of the existing officers. Section 3. Election of Officers: Officers of the organization shall be elected near or within the first week of April. A. Any candidate wishing to run must be nominated by at least one current member, including self-nomination. B. Each candidate shall give a short speech expressing why they are fit for the position. a. If candidate is not able to be present, a written statement shall suffice. C. Officer positions shall be decided by a majority vote. D. Only members who have attended a minimum of three meetings during the semester of voting shall be eligible for nomination to the Executive Team, with an exception for the Presidency, where the nominee must have attended 75 percent of the meetings for that semester. a. An exception to this rule shall be made if a member cannot attend meetings due to academic or work related commitments if this conflict has been communicated to the President and other officers ahead of time. b. No exception shall be made for those seeking the Presidency. Section 4. Terms of office A. All officers shall be elected to a single term of office, described as: one term of office shall last from the end of the academic year during which they were elected until the end of the following academic year, which shall be approximately be one calendar year. B. The president may only serve for two consecutive terms. C. All officers must be able to commit at least 2 to 4 hours a week; attending General Body meetings, weekly Executive Team meetings and carrying out organizational duties. Section 5. Newly elected officers shall attend all weekly Executive Committee meetings and other necessary transition meetings until the end of the school year, at which time they will assume full responsibility. A. The newly elected Executive Team will be expected to meet biweekly over the summer via Skype to ensure adequate preparation for the Fall and Spring semesters. Section 6. Officers shall not be on academic or disciplinary probation at the time of their elections and throughout their terms in the office. Officers must be in good academic standing. Section 7. Impeachment procedure: Impeachment proceedings may occur when an officer is not fulfilling the duties described in Article IV, Section 9. Impeachment of an officer is dependent on a 2/3 vote of the officers. Any member may present a case for office impeachment. Section 8. Vacancies may be filled by the unanimous consent of the officers of the organization. Section 9. Officer Duties: Officer duties shall include but are not limited to the following for each position: A. The President shall be responsible for: - Maintain connection to Nebraska Democratic Party, and other affiliate organizations - Maintain connections to Nebraska Young Democrats - Leading member meetings - Lead and set executive committee meetings - Regular meetings with faculty advisor - Room reservations and other logistics - Sending regular emails to the members of the organization - Communicate with visitors and speakers B. The Vice President of Finance shall be responsible for: - Developing an annual budget to be submitted to CSU in accordance with the rules and regulations of CSU. - Fundraising for any resources that may be needed that cannot be provided through CSU funding. - Keeping track of and making all purchases needed for the organization. C. Vice President of Social Media shall be responsible for: - Regular posts and advertisements on the organization’s Twitter page. - Regular posts and advertisements on the organization’s Facebook page. - Developing appropriate initiatives to increase following on social media platforms. - Management of organizational GroupMe. D. Vice President of Public Relations shall be responsible for: - Producing organizational and event posters. - Producing any advertisement materials used when tabling. - Managing the organizational bulletin board. E. Director of Civic Engagement shall be responsible for: - Producing materials regarding voting procedures and candidate information. - Managing contacts to ensure members have all the information needed to participate in elections. - Programming appropriate initiatives to increase civic engagement on campus (ex: voter registration drop box, voter registration drive, tables). F. Vice President of Recruitment shall be responsible for: - Programming and managing all organizational tables. - Management of Skutt Shutdown table. Article V — Meetings Section l. A regularly scheduled general meeting shall be held every week, in accordance with the executive committee’s judgement. Section II. A presentation should be prepared by the President, with the aid of the Executive Team, for each General Body meeting. This presentation should include an interactive activity that consists of no less than 10 minutes of the allotted meeting time. Section III. Any official business or major decisions must be discussed with the members of general meetings. Section IV. Executive Team meeting are to take place every week of each semester for no less than one hour. It is expected that organizational planning and duties are carried out in these meetings. Article VI. Committees The officers of the organization shall have the authority to create any standing or special committees that will further the purpose of the organization. Article VI — Finances Section l . If the organization dissolves, all funds granted by Creighton Students Union will be returned to the Student Leadership and Involvement Center (SLIC). The remaining funds will be donated to the Nebraska Young Democrats. A. The organization will be considered dissolved if no one is willing to fulfill leadership positions outlined in Article IV. Article VII — Amendments Section l. The executives must provide a week’s notice prior to holding a vote on any proposed amendments Section 2. All amendments shall be approved after meeting the requirements for official business outlined in Article V Section 2. Section 3. Amendments become effective only after approval by the SLIC. .
