According to a study in the journal Cancer, women are being diagnosed with smaller breast tumors than in the past. Experts credit mammograms with finding these cancers earlier, when they are most treatable. Another study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute reported that women whose breast cancer is found with a mammogram often live longer than women whose cancer is found another way. Like any test, mammograms have some limitations. “For example, they will not reveal every cancer,” explains Brandon Mirochnik, M.D., of Riverview Medical Center. “And some breast cancers detected by mammograms may still be hard to treat. But the potential benefits of regular mammograms can mean lives saved — maybe even yours.” CELEBRATE BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH The programs in our Every Woman Counts Educational Series will prepare you to make informed choices about prevention, breast health, and current treatment options. On average, they got pregnant after 56 months of trying vs. 32 months for women without asthma. “Asthma may affect female hormones, and exposure to low-grade inflammation from the disease may also hamper fertility,” says Yanill Hernandez, M.D., of Ocean Medical Center. “But most women with asthma can have a healthy pregnancy, provided they control their disease.” 4 Hackensack Meridian HealthViews SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2016 MORE THAN 83 MILLION AMERICANS SHORT ON SLEEP Worried you’ll sleep your life away? A new study finds that about one-third of Americans have the opposite problem, snoozing less than the recommended seven hours per night. The resulting drowsiness can contribute to car collisions, other accidents, and lost productivity. “Over time, lack of sleep alters your hormones and metabolism, increasing your risk for diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, and heart disease,” says Jeffrey Miskoff, D.O., a pulmonologist at Jersey Shore University Medical Center. To find out where you and the sandman stand, try keeping a 10-day sleep journal. Note when you fall asleep and wake up. Include any naps. Discuss your habits with your doctor. TO NAP OR NOT TO NAP?
