Braden von Sobernheim 13th and 14th century battles between Italian City -States were common- place. While folks were always spiteful of their foes, none were more so than the Modenese against the Bolognese. In 1325 at the Battle of Zappolino, 2,000 cava- liers and 5,000 foot soldiers in the Modenese army defeated a poorly organized Bolognese army of 30,000 foot and 2,000 cavaliers. When the Modenese won (in one of the bloodiest battles that Italy has ever seen – 2,000 dead in 1 battle), the Modenese had a little athletic contest and Fair outside the city walls of Bologna, went in and stole the bucket from the city well, and took it home. For centuries the wood bucket hung from a rope in the Cathedral of Modena, and is now displayed in a case in the basement of the town hall to commemorate the victory. So even now, almost 700 years later, it’s not “Dude we kicked your butt,” it’s “Dude, we kicked your butt AND stole your bucket.” They got pwned. And now you know more random carp. Pic from L to R : Balenor, Reigar, Brandt, Bran, Garrick. Blast From the Past Once upon a time a band of miscreants set out from the Shire of Wealdsmere in search of battle. It was found in the mountains of An Tir at the Alpine Pass War. This was one of the few wars that had a castle. It was made of plywood, had a gate, and 6 -foot walls. During the castle siege scenario it was the job of this little band to pa- trol the outside of the walls and keep those inside from causing any havoc. Garrick, being 6 -foot -seven and wielding a long one -handed axe, was the only one that was having any fun. As those inside were repelling all efforts to storm the gate, and because we were bored, we picked up Reigar and threw him over the wall. That caused all kinds of commotion on the inside, the gate was breached, and the battle won. There was much rejoic- ing. The evening feast was a crowded affair in the lodge, and we were called forward to be given the Award for Extreme Bravery. Navigating the tables was impossible, so we walked on the tables to the front of the hall, tower- ing above all. Henceforth and forevermore we were known as THE BRAVE GUYS. Revered throughout the kingdom, always the mercenaries in demand, and immortalized in song.... "Yeah we have our Brits, And we have our Celts, Got lots of favors, Hanging from our belts, Hey, Hey, we're the Brave Guys!" That's my story and I'm sticking to it.... unless I can think of something better. Exchequer: Please see financial report Populace Meeting Minutes online.
