Pastoral regions have somemes been led by a single pastor, or at mes, mulple pastors have led parishes within a region with a plan to transion to a single pastor over me. While the original plans for pas- toral regions did include occasional elements of unified ministry and parish life, the reality is that in most pasto- ral regions, each parish has remained autonomous and there has been lile collaboraon between them. The plan for Families of Parishes is different. The parishes in the Family will have a common pastor and will be charac- terized by collaboraon and shared resources. A parochial vicar or rered priest may also serve a Family of Par- ishes. This summer, the modeling of these Families of Parishes is beginning and a dra of parish planning process will be completed. Every Family of Parishes will inially discern their Sunday Mass schedules and locaons, bring their parish staff and pastoral councils together and develop a plan for parish programs and acvies with the longRterm goal of becoming one parish led by a single pastor. Beacons of Light is a mulyear process of compre- hensive pastoral planning for the Archdiocese. Each of us is urged to stay engaged by signing up for the free Beacons Update newsleer at CatholicAOC.org/Beacons. Blue Mass A Blue Mass is a Mass celebrated annually in the Catholic Church for those employed in the public safety field (i.e. police officers, firefighters, correconal officers, 911 operators and EMS personnel). The color blue relates to the blueRcolored uniforms predominantly used by these services. The service honors those who have died in the line of duty and those currently serving as first responders. The Mass is an opportunity for the community to show gratude to first responders and their families. Though usually held in a Catholic church, the events are generally considered to be ecumenical or nonRdenominaonal. The Blue Mass dates to September 29, 1934, when Reverend Thomas Dade started the service as part of his dues with the Catholic Police and Fireman’s So- ciety. The first mass was held at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Washington, D.C. and has grown to a naonwide celebraon. The September 29 service was med to coincide with the feast of Saint Michael the Archangel, the patron saint of police officers and military. St. Peter in Chains Cathedral has been hosng a Blue Mass in Septem- ber since 2004. The next Blue Mass will be on Sunday, September 26. Reverend Steve Angi, Cincinna Police Chaplain, will preside. The Naonal Anthem is sung at 10:45 am on the Plum Street plaza as folks gather for the blessing of safety apparatus and vehicles. During Mass names of those who died in the previous year are read. Vocation Views Rise, and do not be afraid.” So many experience fear or trepidaon when called to the priesthood and/or reli- gious life. God strengthens those who are called if they but respond with a generous heart. (Mahew 5:38R48) If you want to talk about your discernment, please contact Fr.
