PREMIER CURRICULUM SERIES Based on the Sunshine State Standards for Secondary Education, established by the State of Florida, Department of Education THINGS TO REMEMBER BIOLOGY Copyright 2009 Revision Date:12/2009 Biology Things to Remember Lesson 1 . In the 1950s, life forms called coacervates were made in test tubes. The word "logos" means study of. LeMatire was the scientist helped to popularize the study of biology. Botany is the study of plants. Darwin presented the ideas of evolutionary biology. All forms of life are made of cells. 98% percent of our DNA is identical to a chimp’s. The ultimate source of energy for life functions is the Sun. Plants make Glucose during photosynthesis. It is not possible to mate a cat with a dog. Lesson 2 . Amoeba is an example of a single cell animal. Tissues are made from groups of cells. Organelles are considered to be the internal organs of cells. Chloroplasts are found in plant cells. The founder of genetics was Mendel. The Human Genome Project was not concerned with discovering genes. Mutations are produced when cells do not undergo correct division. The sex genes males carry consist of one X and one Y chromosome. In RNA, the amino acid thymine is replaced by Uracil. Primates are divided into prosimians and anthropoids. Lesson 3 . Ecology is the study of how animals and plants interact with their environment. Ecology was suggested to be an independent subject for study in 1866. Herbivores eat plants. A biome is a body or area that supports many types of animals and plants. The speed of the surface of the Earth at the North Pole, due to the Earth’s speed of rotation is 0Km/hr. The Biosphere II is located near Tucson, Arizona. John Allen developed the concept of Biosphere II. The amount of Oxygen in the air is 21 percent. Left and right handedness is called chirality. Hydrolysis of water produces Oxygen and Hydrogen. Lesson 4 . Carbon accounts for about 18.5% of organic compounds. The most common element in salts is Ca. Catalysts are used to speed up biochemical reactions in cells. Tin is a trace element in our bodies. An acute illness is a severe one. The term "chronic" means an illness happens often. A virus attach itself to the element zinc. Antibiotics are not effective to treat a virus. The science of life beyond the Earth is exobiology. Ozma was the first project to actually look for life in outer space. 2 Biology Things to Remember Lesson 5 . A fungus is not a plant. Theophrastus was the Greek philosopher who first suggested the study of biology. Helmont discovered that plants did not obtain food from soil. Ingenhousz figured out that plants derived energy from the Sun. The person who suggested that plant cells exist was Hooke. A plant that has a system of veins for fluids is termed vascular. Gymnosperms is the type of plant that has seeds. The term "phyta" means plant. Humans are considered to be omnivores. When animals work together, they form a synergistic relationship. Lesson 6 . Aristotle was first to classify animals. Some water animals are herbivores. Arthropods are the most prolific animals on the planet. The trilobite was a primitive arthropod that became extinct. An ichthyologist of scientist studies fishes. The most prolific amphibians are toads. Herpetology is the study of reptiles. The uniqueness that defines mammals is mammary glands. The smallest bird is a Hummingbird. The largest group of mammals is the placentals. Lesson 7 . The study of past societies is known as archaeology. The second most abundant element in the body is Carbon. The most human type of primates are the gorillas. Apes and Monkeys are not the same . Orrorin tugnensis is also called millennium man. The largest apes are the gorillas. Neanderthals were part of the Homo sapien family. Homo sapien - sapien is also known as Cro-Magnon. Homo sapiens and Neanderthals lived at the same time. TPEPDREQ stands for the steps in the scientific method. 3 Author: David H. Menke Copyright 2009 Revision Date:12/2009.
