GROSSE ILE YACHT CLUB 2011 DOWNRIVER RACE /L EUKEMIA CUP Regatta BELLE ISLE TO GROSSE ILE AN EVENT FOR BOTH SAIL AND POWER YACHTS SATURDAY , JULY 30 TH , 2011 June 20 th , 2011 Dear Skipper, Attached you will find the Notice of Race and Application for the 2011 Grosse Ile Yacht Club’s annual Regatta, the Downriver Race. This year our club has been afforded the unique opportunity to partner with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Michigan to also host a Leukemia Cup Regatta in conjunction with our Downriver race, in honor and memory of Patti McCarthy, wife of PC Terry McCarthy. The name of our 2011 event will be the GIYC Downriver Race/Leukemia Cup Regatta. The Leukemia Cup is a fundraising event, with all the proceeds going to the LLS to help fight blood cancers. The chance to participate in the Leukemia Cup is open to all yachts, both power and sail , even those not participating in the Downriver Race. Please note that there are separate applications for both events. Yachts wishing to participate in the Downriver Race simply need to fill out the application for the race, and send in the proper fees and documentation. Yachts, power or sail, wishing to participate the Leukemia Cup need to either fill out the separate attached application and return it to the LLS, or go on line and register at www.leukemiacup.org/mi . Our committee has set as one of it’s goals to have 100% participation of all registered yachts in the Downriver Race to also participate in the Leukemia Cup, so we would encourage you to sign up for both events if possible. Skippers who register for the Leukemia Cup by July 8 th will get their boat’s name on the sleeve of the official Leukemia Cup Shirt that is included in the registration of all Leukemia Cup participants. In addition, there are many incentives for yachts that raise more than the minimum donation, up to and including a fantasy sail with Gary Jobson this fall in New York harbor. Come and join us at Detroit Yacht Club on Friday evening, July 29 th , for the pre-race party, where we will feature an “Open House” aboard yachts flying the Leukemia Cup pennant. Wander the docks and enjoy camaraderie with your fellow event participants, then enjoy dinner and dancing at DYC throughout the evening. During the race, participating power yachts may follow the race down the river, enjoying the spectacle, and serving as patrol boats. Following the race, we will have music provided by legendary blues musician David Gerald at GIYC, along with a silent auction of some amazing items and drink and dinner specials. This is an event that is not to be missed in the summer of 2011, so we hope all who can attend will participate. An additional goal of our committee is to bring the Leukemia Cup to GIYC in 2011, which will only be done if we raise more money than any other Michigan yacht club that is hosting a Leukemia Cup event this year – so, we hope you can join us and help bring the cup home!
