As a result of the gen- Tom Hambright erosity of our Friends of the Library organization, two other Sr. Librarian Florida History staff members and I were fortunate enough to attend this year’s Breana Sowers American Library Association’s Annual Conference in Orlando, Sr. Librarian Archivist an extraordinary place to be if you love books and the people Michael Nelson who write them. Sr. Librarian Circulation I’m a sucker for a signed book. Not a free book, per se, Patricia Blanco which are prevalent at the conference—in fact, at first glance, Sr. Youth Services Librarian the exhibition hall could easily be mistaken for a massive looting of an outsized Barnes & Nobles store—librarians and book Allison Rich lovers rolling around suitcases and stuffing them full of advance Sr. Library Assistant reading copies and an array of branded tchotchkes. Sadly, the Kenny Clarke lines for gratis snacks were even longer than the lines for author signings, proving definitively Library Assistant that Viet Thanh Nguyen, this year’s winner of the Pulitzer Prize in Fiction, could not compete Wendi Ney with free nachos. But those few moments where I did get to meet an author, those few minutes Library Assistant when I found Colson Whitehead sitting alone at a table with stacks of reading copies of The Emil Oesterling Underground Railroad in front of him, waiting for the librarians to finish eating their free Library Assistant lunch of sandwiches and potato chips, and getting to tell him how funny I think his work is Leo Cabrera (not knowing at the time about the relentlessly dark nature of his latest novel, or his pending Library Assistant Oprah-approved status) are the moments I’ll remember most, those moments I’ll be genuinely Patrick Birmingham grateful I got to have. Library Assistant By the way, you can get your own signed book at our author event on November 22nd at 6pm for Nathan Hill, author of one of the year’s most acclaimed novels, The Nix.
