Sir James Malcolm entered the Marines in 1779, at the age of 13. He continued to serve in that distinguished corps for 48 years, beloved and respected by officers and soldiers, and in active service uniformly distinguished by the approbation of his superiors. After the battle of St. Domingo, in 1806, he was made Brevet Major. In 1812 he was appointed to the command of the Second Battalion of Marines, which was first employed in Spain, and afterwards in North America. He was publicly thanked for the gallantry of his men, at the attack of Fort Oswagay, more especially for their perfect state of discipline, which enabled him to bring them off in a dark night from a town just taken by storm, without one man being in a state of drunkenness, or missing from the ranks. This circumstance is noticed in the Gazette, dated the 5th of July, 1814. In 1815, Sir James was created Commander of the Bath. In 1827, after a long period of continued and distinguished service, he retired to his native dale, where his family had long been loved and respected. There he closed his life, honoured, respected, and deeply lamented by all. In Eskdale, he will long be affectionately remembered, and spoken of as a pattern of a truly warm-hearted, upright, and honourable man. - Dumfries Herald. 18th January 1850 (Week 3) BIRTHS Here, at George Street, on the 12th instant, the wife of Mr Robert Beattie, grocer, of a daughter.
