MATTHEW MARTINEZ, CHAIRMAN, SUBCOMMITTEE ON EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES Mr. MARTINEZ. As somebody said this morning, I would belate to my own funeral. I don't know if that is necessarily true, but at least let me apologize to my colleague, Pat Schroeder. We are going to be joined ina few minutes by Congressman Hayes. So I will just go ahead and start thehearing, and get my morning and get my statement out of theway. Let me welcome you all today to this hearing, thefirst of a two- day hearing. The Subcommitteeon Employment Opportunities, which I am the chairman of, has called thishearing to raise a vari- ety of issues and problems pertaining towomen in the workplace. We are here to discuss legislation which might alleviateany ad- verse conditions that might exist. There is one bill that we will focuson throughout the hearing, H.R. 2577, I believe appropriately called the Economic EquityAct of 1987. This bill is an omnibus bill that combines about 13other bills and was introduced last month byour first witness today, the Honorable Pat Schroeder, possible candidate forthe presidency, and our colleague the Honorable Olympia Snowe, whowill be our first witness at tomorrow's hearing. There will be three panels each day. The first panel todaywill discuss women in the work force, the broad perspective;the second will discuss barriers inpay equity; and the last will discuss wider opportunities for women
