II. .' 1 FILE NO. _--=.:05::.:1:..::1...::...:75~ __ RESOLUTION NO. _-L 1_9:..-..=3_-_·O:.="S=---4 __ 1 [Commending Intersection for the Arts 40th Anniversary.] 2 3 Resolution commending the Intersection for the Arts on the occasion of their 40th 4 anniversary of providing an alternative, independent art space and eclectic, diverse 5 arts programming to San Francisco's communities. 6 7 WHEREAS, Intersection for the Arts is San Francisco's oldest alternative art space 8 (est. 1965) and has a long history of presenting new and experimental work in the fields of 9 literature, theater, music and the visual arts; and, 10 WHEREAS, Intersection for the Arts has nurtured and supported the Bay Area's 11 cultural community through service, technical support, and mentorship programs; and, 12 WHEREAS, Intersection provides a place where provocative ideas, diverse art forms, 13 artists, and audiences car) intersect one another; and, 14 WHEREAS, At Intersection for the Arts, experimentation and risk are possible, debate 15 and critical inquiry are embraced, community is essential, resources and experience are 16 democratized, and today's issues are thrashed about in the heat and immediacy of live art; 17 and, 18 WHEREAS, Intersection for the Arts began as a merger of several faith-based 19 experiments that were using art to reach disenfranchised neighborhood youth while also 20 providing artists who were conscientious objectors with an alternative to serving in the 21 Vietnam war; and, 22 WHEREAS, Intersection for the Arts has consistently been rooted in a commitment to 23 use art to provide alternative solutions to immediate community and larger world concerns; 24 and, 25 WHEREAS, Widely considered to be one of the most vital and important cultural SUPERVISOR MIRKARIMI J bol4 BOARD OF SUPERVISORS .:1 Page I 6114/2005 1 centers in the Bay Area, Intersection is well-known for its commitment to emphasizing the 2 process of art-making and creating space and time for artists and audience members to come 3 together to imagine and create new cultural experiments that aim to transform our world; and, 4 WHEREAS, Over the past four decades, this venerable institution has provided the 5 Bay Area with an almost incomprehensible array of groundbreaking multi-disciplinary cultural 6 programming and has worked with a remarkable range of artists including Whoopi Goldberg, 7 Jessica Hagedorn, Michael Ondaatje, David Henry Hwang, Carolyn Forche, and Ishmael 8 Reed. Recently, we have worked with Alice Walker, bell hooks, John Trudell, Denis Johnson, 9 Lebbeus Woods, Mike Davis, Dave Eggers, Jimmy Santiago Baca, Stefon Harris, Naomi 10 lizuka, Claudia Bernardi, Joe Goode, and Gary Snyder as well as thousands of emerging 11 artists; and, 12 WHEREAS, On an annual budget of only $630,000, Intersection incubates more than 13 120 emerging arts organizations and artists each year - many of which go on to have lasting 14 impact including Youth Speaks, Flyaway Productions, and Galeria de la Raza; and, 15 WHEREAS, Intersection for the Arts produces, presents, and collaborates on 16 thousands of multidisciplinary public events and programs year-round including original site- 17 specific gallery installations and exhibitions, world premiere plays, and hundreds of concerts, 18 performances, readings, workshops and community forums, and; 19 WHEREAS, Through the Resident Artists Programs, Intersection for the Arts houses 20 and supports more than 20 local artists including Sean San Jose, Margo Hall, Luis Saguar & 21 Michael Torres of Campo Santo Theatre Company; Claudia Bernardi; Marcus Shelby, Wayne 22 Wallace & Scott Amendola through Jazz at Intersection; Dan Wolf & Tommy Shepherd of 23 Felonious: OneLoveHipHop; and Erika Shuch & the ESP Project; and, 24 WHEREAS, For four decades, Intersection for the Arts has emphasized the process of 25 art-making and Intersection for the Arts is committed to providing as many opportunities as SUPERVISOR MIRKARIM!
