In addition, with this version 1.2 release, support will be extended to the new IBM Power servers that run the IBM i operating system2. These IBM Power servers will now be able to run many x86 Linux applications1 using PowerVM Lx86 on Linux partitions alongside partitions running IBM i or AIX operating systems. VIOS is an appliance that resides in a POWER5, POWER6, or IBM BladeCenter JS12, JS21, or JS22 partition. It facilitates the sharing of physical I/O resources between client partitions within the server. VIOS provides virtual SCSI devices and Ethernet bridging between virtual and physical networks. VIOS is offered as a standard feature on all PowerVM Editions. VIOS V1.5.2 offers support for IPv6, Tivoli Productivity Center, and additional CIM providers. 1 PowerVM Lx86 runs most x86 Linux applications; however, PowerVM Lx86 cannot run certain applications. Refer to the Limitations section for further information. 2 PowerVM Lx86 is not supported on existing System i servers. Overview The convergence of System i™ and System p™ server platforms into the new Power Systems platform provides greater flexibility for clients to deploy servers that can run any combination of the AIX®, IBM i operating system (formerly known as i5/OS™), and Linux™ operating IBM United States Announcement 208-082 IBM is a registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation 1 systems. IBM is committed to helping clients improve the responsiveness of systems and people as they deploy Power Systems servers. For this reason, IBM provides a six-layer Power Systems software stack for AIX, Linux, and IBM i customers that includes platform management, energy management, security, high availability, operating systems and integration, and virtualization. Within this integrated, yet modular software stack are a number of offerings that are designed to deliver value to clients by helping them increase efficiency, reduce costs and keep their data secure: • Management: Optimize your datacenter management with a comprehensive system management solution that helps IT organizations to effectively deploy, monitor, analyze, optimize, and maintain physical and virtual resources on Power Systems servers. IBM Director is the key element of the Management layer that enables cross-platform management and integrates with enterprise management solutions, such as IBM Tivoli® products. A suite of management offerings complement IBM Director by enabling unique resource management of Power Systems components. • Energy: Manage your datacenter costs with IBM Director Active Energy Manager which exploits innovative IBM EnergyScale technology to help you reduce energy consumption, balancing business workload needs with policies for energy use. Active Energy Manager allows you to monitor, analyze, and report system energy consumption and thermal data and, on selected systems, control energy consumption. • Security: Keep your data secure with role-based access control and encrypted file system capabilities built right into the AIX 6 operating system. For IBM i customers, IBM Secure Perspective allows organizations to create and manage enforceable security policies, defining who has access to which data for what purposes. • Availability: Strive for continuous operations with IBM's portfolio of solutions designed to help protect your business from unplanned outages. Concurrent maintenance features in selected Power Systems servers and failover/disaster recovery solutions, such as PowerHA Cluster Manager for AIX and Linux environments and PowerHA Cluster Manager for i for IBM i environments, improve serviceability and help decrease planned downtime. • OS and integration: Maximize your choice of solutions with broad workload support on AIX, IBM i, and Linux operating systems across the Power Systems server portfolio, or consolidated on the same server. Power Systems operating systems are designed for high-performance and scalability, delivering features that support all other layers of the software stack. • Virtualization: Optimize your IT infrastructure with the industrial strength virtualization platform for AIX , IBM i, and Linux — PowerVM. PowerVM enables improved efficiency via server consolidation, and can help eliminate planned downtime with the ability to dynamically move running workloads from one server to another without application disruption. PowerVM Standard and PowerVM Enterprise editions are offered under License PID 5765-G34. PowerVM Standard and PowerVM Enterprise are separated into individual License and Software Maintenance offerings in this announcement. The product ID and features are defined in the Ordering information section. IBM offers PowerVM Lx86, which is designed to support the installation and running of many 32-bit x86 Linux applications1 on IBM Power 520, Power 550, Power 570, Power 575, and Power 595 Systems platforms, the IBM BladeCenter® JS21, IBM BladeCenter JS22, IBM BladeCenter JS12, and System p servers with POWER6™, POWER5+™, or POWER5™ processors2. Version 1.2 is a new release of PowerVM Lx86, which offers more options for clients wanting to consolidate 32-bit x86 Linux applications on Power Systems servers. It also offers the potential to improve the performance of certain 32-bit x86 Linux applications enabled with PowerVM Lx86 compared to version 1.1, particularly on POWER6 processor-based systems. PowerVM Lx86 is offered as a standard feature of all PowerVM Editions. 5765-AVE is no longer available as a standalone product and is instead used for IBM internal order processing. The new PowerVM Lx86 version 1.2 now supports two additional Linux operating system distribution releases, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9 for POWER™ version SP4 (SLES 9 SP4) and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 for POWER version 4.6 (RHEL4.6).
