Since the program began in 1908, the Tar Heels have won 1,443 dual matches, an all-time record in colle- 2009 Season Outlook giate tennis. Under the guidance of Sam Paul, UNC has continued to achieve new milestones on a yearly basis. In 2009, the Tar Heels will face a fresh set of challenges. UNCʼs 2008 squad finished among the elite, ranked 13th in the nation after making it to the round of 16 in the NCAA tournament. They posted a 21-6 overall record with a stellar 9-1 mark in ACC play, and closed the regular season on a 15-1 tear. However, North Carolina only returns two starters from that team in 2009. The first of those two is senior team captain Taylor Fogleman. Fogleman has been solid as a rock for the Tar Heels in the past two seasons, leading the team in both singles and doubles wins in 2006-07 and 2007-08. This season, he returns with All-Amer- ica honors for his doubles play in 2008, a year which he finished ranked fourth in the na- tion. He looks to build off of outstanding sophomore and junior years to become one of the elite players in college tennis. Fogleman is no stranger to tough competition in dou- bles, as his 2008 campaign indicates. However, his biggest challenge in 2009 will be bal- ancing preparation for a much tougher singles schedule with the increased leader- ship role he will assume as the lone senior and the team captain. If his past two years are any indicator of his resilience and de- termination, though, he will be up for the task in 2009. The second is junior and former transfer Clay Donato. Donatoʼs first turn as a Tar Heel came last season after transfer- ring from Texas A&M, and it was nothing short of sensational.
