Advanced Scripture Summer Reading Guide Old Testament Books Ruth, Esther, Judith, Jonah & Tobit Please note: I picked this book for your summer reading because I want you to gain an understanding of the people of the Old Testament. These particular books are much like novelettes conveying stories of faith and courage in the face of the genocide of a people, the loss of a homeland, and even the grips of a whale in the sea. Hopefully, you will get a unique insight into the faith of these individuals and carry these stories with you throughout your lifetime. This is a guide to assist you in your read of this book. You must know the answers, but you are not required to write these out. If you submit typed responses to these questions you will receive extra credit. There are two parts to the study guide. Ms. Jenny McConnell Review Questions I. ANSWER THE FOLLOWING 9 QUESTIONS FOR EACH BOOK: (refer to the introduction and footnotes of the book to assist you) 1. Who was the main person featured in the book? Who were the secondary players 2. What is the date and location of the story in the book? What was going on at the time the story was written? 3. Summarize the main theme of the story? 4. What themes did you notice in the reading of the story? 5. What does the story teach you about relationships? 6. What does the story teach you about theme? 7. How would you describe God from this account? 8. What message would this convey to the reader of the time? 9. Do you relate to this person? Is there any lesson that you have learned from the story? 10. Find an image that you think illustrates this person. (go to google images and search) II. Write a response to the following prompt, or be prepared to discuss this in class. (written response required for extra credit) Compare and contrast the main characters, Tobit, Ruth, Esther, Judith, & Jonah in terms of their characters, relationships and faith in God. The following are points to consider and include in your response: o What were their strengths and weaknesses in comparison to one another? o Who do you believe is the most courageous of the group? Moral? Faithful? Crafty? o Which person do you most identify with in your own personal characteristics and belief in God? o Who would you compare each of these persons with in modern times? o What event in these accounts most impacted you? .
