GOVERNMENT OF NORTHERN IRELAND CENSUS OF POPULATION OF NORTHERN IRELAND 1951 County of Armagh Printed & presented pursuant to 14 & 15 Geo. 6, Ch. 6 BELFAST : HER MAJESTY'S STATIONERY OFFICE 1954 PRICE 7s M NET GOVERNMENT OF NORTHERN IRELAND CENSUS OF POPULATION OF NORTHERN ffiELAND 1951 County of Armagh Printed & presented pursuant to 14 & 15 Geo. 6, Ch. 6 BELFAST ; HER MAJESTY'S STATIONERY OFFICE 1954 PREFACE Three censuses of population have been taken since the Governinent of Northern Ireland was established. The first enumeration took place in 1926 and incorporated questions relating to occupation and industry, orphanhood and infirmities. The second enumeration made in 1937 was of m^ore limited scope and was intended to bridge the gap between the census of 1926 and the census which it was proposed to take in 1941, but which had to be abandoned owing to the outbreak of war. The census taken as at mid night of 8th-9th April, 1951, forms the basis of this report and like that in 1926 questions were asked as to the occupations and industries of the population. The length of time required to process the data collected at an enumeration before it can be presented in the ultimate reports is necessarily considerable. In order to meet immediate requirements, however, two Preliminary Reports on the 1951 census were published. The first of these gave the population figures by administrative areas and towns and villages, and by Counties and County Boroughs according to religious profession. The Second Report, which was restricted to Counties and County Boroughs, gave the population by age groups. The present volume is the fifth of seven county volumes (the Belfast County Borough and Counties of Antrim, Down and Londonderry volumes having been published already) and has been prepared (as were also the Preliminary Reports) in accordance with the provisions of the Census Act (Northern Ireland) 1951. The statistics now published supersede those shown in the Preliminary Reports and m^y be accepted as final. This volume is consistent in design and scope with the previous volumes and the remaining county volumes which will be published within the next few months will be prepared in like manner. A General Report for the whole of Northern Ireland xvill folloAr the county volumes. This will bring together, and in some respects show in greater detail, the information contained in the county volumes. Additional features will also be introduced particu larly in regard to the distribution of the people industrially by age and marital condition. Following the 1926 census a topographical index was published dealing with each type of area for which statistics were supplied in the county series. A supplement to this index was published after the 1937 census and a further supplement in respect of the 1951 census will be prepared in due course. Census publications are obtainable either directly from H.M. Stationery Office, Chichester House, Chichester Street, Belfast, or from any book-seller. L. The acreage covered by the larger rivers and lakes is not in cluded in the body of Tables 4 and 5 but is given in footnotes thereto. POPULATION The population comprises all persons on land, in vessels on inland waters or in port or at anchorage on census night, and also persons on coastwise voyages who arrived in port within a brief period not having been enumerated elsewhere. Members of the Forces of the Crown are also included. ADMINISTRATIVE DIVISIONS The County is divided into nine county districts (two municipal boroughs, three urban districts and four rural districts) comprising 84 district electoral divisions, nine of which are coterminous with entire municipal boroughs or urban districts or wards thereof (see table 4). Wards, where they exist in borotighs or urban districts, are the units for the purpose of municipal elections. In rural districts the unit is the district electoral division. The County is also divided into twenty county electoral divisions, which are the units for the purpose of county council elections (see table 5). Owing to the abolition of the Boards of Guardians, details of the Poor Law Union and Dispensary districts are not given in this volume. These areas, however, form respectively, superintendent registrars' and registrars' districts for the registration of marriages, births and deaths, and consequently the census tabulations have been pre pared in a manner suitable for the extraction of data according to these areas should such be required. There are four parliamentary constituencies for elections to the Northern Ireland Parliament, and one for elections to the United Kingdom Parliament (see table 9). The Armagh Education Area is coterminous with the County. The changes made in the constitution or boundaries of administrative divisions of the County during the last intercensal period are as follows:- (a) The boundary of Armagh Urban District was extended (1st April, 1945 and nth June, 1946). (b) The boundary of Keady Urban District was extended (1st April, 1948). (c) A portion of Armagh Rural District was transferred to Armagh Urban District (1st April, 1945 and 11th June, 1946); and a portion to Keady Urban District (1st April, 1948). (d) Lurgan Urban District was made a Municipal Borough (7th July, 1949), the boundary having been extended (1st April, 1938). (e) Portadown Urban District was made a Municipal Borough (2nd October, 1947), the boundary having been extended (1st April, 1947). (f) A portion of Lurgan Rural District was transferred to Lurgan Urban District (1st April, 1938); and a portion to Portadown Urban District (1st April, 1947). (14699) Vll HOUSES 1.
