Up & breakfast early & went by Metropolitan Railway to Waterloo in fur coat to attend funeral of Hamilton Fletcher's little baby at Winchester. Met Pollock, Mervyn & Hamilton. Dense fog at railway. Down to Winchester. Lovely day there but cold. Cold in head came on during day. Funeral. Name of Kensington & Bugle after. Snapp officiated. No lunch. 1 LINLEY SAMBOURNE'S DIARY 1889 Took Mervyn & gave him some at Black Swan after looking in at George. Back to town. Sleep. Fog better. Home by 4 wheeler & hansom. Dressed & followed M to Arthur à Beckett's. Slow evening. Shilling in pudding. Next Mrs Boys. Home by mare in carriage. Cold came on badly at night. (Red ink across page: Hard frost.) Wednesday January 2 Cold very bad in morning. Chest sore. Tidied up things. Wrote letters. In afternoon walked to Punch dinner. Met Spencer. Called Briggs about stick etc. Agnew at dinner. Magnums of Ayala. Home with Guthrie in carriage. Very cold. (Red ink across page: Hard frost.) Thursday January 3 Dull cold morning. Cold better, but bad. Photod Jolley pm, Gladstone & Mandoline. Sent for mandoline & costume to May's & Chappell's. After dinner slept 1 hour & went to fetch Maud from Messels. Very cold. Cold bad. Took Dummy down to supper, Parsons & small German. Home at 12.15am. Maud all right. (Red ink across page: Very cold.) Friday January 4 Up & worked on Gladstone & Mandoline. At noon F.C.B wrote to want 2nd cut. Did it after 5.0pm, Captn Shaw & London. Dinner 10.45 & bed after sleep. (Red ink across page: Very cold.) Saturday January 5 In morning went with M to Private view of Old Masters at Burlington House. Saw Humphrey Ward, Horsley, Aird etc etc. Lunch at St James's. Saw Biddle. After went to see 'Sweet Lavender' at Terry's theatre. Guthrie & Maud & Roy joined us. Minnie Ha Ha. Missed carriage on Embankment. Took 4 wheeler. Found carriage. Sent Maud & M home. Roy & self walked home. Called on Stokes at Metropole. Saw Telegraph working. Boat race on Tyne. Bought cream & sausages at Crafts. Home. Quiet evening. Small room after. Bed 11.30pm. (Red ink across page: Very cold.) Sunday January 6 Hard hard frost. Up & went with Maud & Roy to Round Pond with Tony. Saw skating. Lots on ice. At 12.30pm drove mare to Barker's & lunched at Wimbledon. Arthur Linley, Aunt Alice, Davidsons & Mr Coghlan there. Home in afternoon. Hamilton & Ada came in at 4.0pm & dined after with Conrad & Effie & Spencer. Chicks dined at small table. Pleasant evening. Up late. Whiskey. Talk of estate with Spencer. (Red ink across page: Hard frost. Skating.) Monday January 7 Early in the morning dear Roy fell in the hall at garden door & broke his nose on the oak box. Bled very much & shook him. Brave boy. At 12.30 walked up to Club. Spoke to policeman in Row & walked all way up. Got hot. Lunched at Club with Grain & Evans. Fog came on. On to Covent Garden theatre. Met M & Chicks in Box 98. Had it changed. Saw Bear & Dog. Carriage in King St. Sent Chicks & M home. Cup of tea at Club. Saw Hare. Walked to 2 LINLEY SAMBOURNE'S DIARY 1889 Knightsbridge. Got eggs at Crafts. Met carriage at French Embassy & home. Dinner. Quiet evening. Wired to Harris about Baddelley. No celebrations. Bed 11.0pm. (Red ink across page: Very cold.) Tuesday January 8 In morning frost broke. Pass sent for 1889 from Forbes. Roy better. M went out. Wrote letters. (Red ink across page: Frost gave in.) Wednesday January 9 Lovely morning. Got on mare & rode to Kingston. Met Richmond A.R.A. Dull. Bad lunch. Garrulous horse keeper. Mare fresh. Cold. Home through Park. Back in afternoon. Rested. After drove & dined at Tom Eykyns. Met Barkers, Madleys, whiteheaded bore etc etc. Home at 11.0. No smoke. Thursday January 10 In morning wrote letters & waited for letter from F.C.B. Telegram from Swain. No subject, after 2 letters from F.C.B. Boy called & photod him in rain for Rosebery. Worked all afternoon. Wire to have dined with Stokes. Dined quietly at home. Did not work after dinner. Friday January 11 Long hard day's work. In morning finished Rosebery as Crossing Sweeper. After photod Stace as Bismarck. Also Jolley & self tug of war. Finished tug of war at 9.15. Bottle Saumur. Bed 1.0pm. Slept after. Saturday January 12 Worked all morning. Finished at 1.0 drawing for Punch, Bismarck & Snakes. Abel Watmore bought Barker's horse. Annoyed. Went round to stable. Snow wet. After lunch 4 wheel cab with Chicks to Savoy theatre. Guthrie came in. Saw Banks & Twiss. Delighted with Yeoman of the Guard. Walked to Club. Cab 8115. Bad horse. Tea. Listen to Harris. Home. Omnibus at Knightsbridge. Quiet dinner. Read Nights. Bed 11.0pm. Sunday January 13 Up at 9.30. At 10.30 rode mare to Richmond. Met Barker's groom at Robin Hood Gate. Hard ride through Park. Parted at Barnes Common. Home. Tony spoiled Newmarket boots. (Red ink: By lifting his leg, Jan 11 '96.) Lunch. Put clothes in order. Wrote letters. Wrong headed candle. Chicks down to dinner. Maud blotted desk. After dinner went in carriage to Alexanders. Met Mrs Charles Ingram, Mrs Earl etc etc. Home 1.20am. Pleasant evening. Monday January 14 Very cold raw day. Stove smoked. Guthie sent children slides. Wrote letters. Abbey's invite. Rode in Park in morning. Looked in at Empire. Saw Ray Lancaster. Cheque sent by Collingridge, £84 only. Went in afternoon to call on Mrs Fk Barr, 8 Hans Road. On by cab to Stores. Saw manager about studs. On to Lady Freake's at home. Good fiddling. Arthur Blunt, Burgess RA. Home by carriage. In evening went on to Chesters at home. Met Lintons, Mrs Harley & daughter, Brandon Thomas's etc etc. Claude. Very late. Home at 5.15 from Temple Kensington at 4.0am. 3 LINLEY SAMBOURNE'S DIARY 1889 Tuesday January 15 Rode in Park in morning. Good fresh canter after late last night. Took Maud & Roy by cab to National Gallery (very dark) & on to Exhibition of Stuarts. After called Charbonel & Walker & on to Fine Art Society. Saw Japanese things. On home by tea time. Wednesday January 16 In morning rode. Tallard called in morning, delayed me riding. Wired about cheque to Collingridge. At 2.0 went with Chicks to Court Theatre & saw Goody Two Shoes. Carriage put me down at Sloane St. Walked on to Punch dinner. Tea at Club. Met Bancroft. Furniss elected to Beefsteak. Sent him a wire. Chaff about wire & Stock Exchange. Saw Tallard again in shop. Bradbury bad. Went home in carriage at 12.0am from Bouverie St. Thursday January 17 Letter from Collingridge in morning. No cheque & more worry. Wrote letters & rode in Park after. Galloped home. Humbugging about work. Burnand wrote for Speculative subject. Wrote letters all afternoon. In evening dined with Osgood & Abbey. Farewell dinner to Millet. Good dinner at Arts Club. Called on Lawson & selected nails etc. Cards after at Osgood's. Lost £2.0.0. On home at 2.30am with Colin Hunter. Friday January 18 Up early & waited for F.C.B about work. Much worried. Had to wait until 12.30 to begin Punch Notes. Worked all day & finished 10.15pm. Dinner. No wine. Bed 1.0pm. Sent Jolley twice to F.C.B with mare. Saturday January 19 (Newspaper cutting pasted in, death of Katherine Monro.) Fine. In morning at 10.0 drove in dog cart to see Lord Mayor. Took Roy. Folkestone slipped on asphalt. Jolley drove him after. Saw Lord Mayor & also Soulsby. Unsatisfactory interview. On with Roy to church, Holborn. After to British Museum. Sent him home & walked to Club. Lunched. Saw Beetle & Jones. After went on to Avenue Theatre & saw Arthur Roberts in Nadgy. Took cab on to George Lewis's.
