CATALOGUE OF SURGICAL INSTRUMENTS. 3 Auricles, or External Ears for the Deaf. a, Spring, capable of being graduated to any size required, passing over the head to support the Auricles in the proper position. b b, Gradually diminishing tubes, by means of which the large body of sound received at the openings e e is reflected to a powerful focus at c c. c c, I ubes opening into the ear, conducting the condensed rays of sound directly to the tym- panum. Auricles, No. 1, $6; No. 2, $6; No. 3, $6.50; No. 4 . $7.00 It will be perceived, by reference to the accom- panying wmodcut, that this apparatus is intended to reflect, by means of a gradually diminishing tube, a large body of rays of sound into the ear, and thus to aid the hearing. An idea of the manner in which it acts may be derived from the way in which lenses or spectacles act upon light. As spectacles refract rays of light to the eye, so these reflect, in as great a degree, rays of sound to the ear. They are, therefore, to the ear what spectacles are to the eye. They are made of a sonorous metal, in such a manner as to combine great efficiency with the greatest convenience; and are so light as hardly to be felt, when short experience has accustomed the wearer to their use. They may be concealed from obseiwation by means of the hair or head-dress, and worn with the hat or bonnet. There are four sizes, for different degrees of deafness; and, in sending orders, it should be stated whether they are intended for a person slightly, moderately, or very deaf. They can be sent to any part of the country without injury; and will be exchanged, if not suited to the particular degree ofdeafness. By reason of their successful use in many hundred in- stances where we have sold them, we offer them with much confidence in their utility. — A liberal discount will be made to those purchasing by the quantity to sell again. See Conversation Tubes and Hearing Trumpets. 4 CODMAN AND SHURTLEFF’S Batteries, Dr. Page’s Portable, in neat box, each . $12.00 “ Coil, in neat box, for family use 10.00 “ Smith’s Direct and To-and-fro Current . 12.00 The same, with extra appliances 16.00 Battery for Electro-plating, Smee’s ....$3.50 to 4.00 “ for local ana3sthesia, complete T2.00 Batteries, Rotary, or Magneto-Electric Machine . 8.00 This Battery is superior in several particulars to those which have been in the market for a few years past. Either the direct or to-and-fro current may be procured at will. The use, and consequent noise and friction, of cog-wheels is avoided; the liability to get out of order diminished; and, by a simple contrivance, the band is kept at therequisite tension in damp or dry weather. To these the at- tention of the trade is particularly invited. The following cut represents the Battery with front of box removed, for the purpose of showing the ma- chinery more clearly.
