2009 Fighting Irish Gridiron Golf Classic Monday, Oct. 5 & Tuesday, Oct. 6 2009 The Warren Golf Course • Notre Dame, Ind. Senior Josh Sandman Senior Doug Fortner Tournament Preview A new tradition began in 2006 when the University of Notre Dame played host to the inaugural Fighting Irish Gridiron Golf Classic at the Warren Golf Course. Cre- ated by head coach Jim Kubinski, the Gridiron Golf Classic features a fun-filled weekend, blending the best of college golf with the unique experience of a Notre Dame football game. This year, the participants will have the opportunity to watch Notre Dame play Washington at historic Notre Dame Stadium. 2009 marks the fourth time Notre Dame will play host to the Fighting Irish Gridiron Classic. Lamar won the first-ever Fighting Irish Gridiron Golf Classic title in 2006 with the Cardinals’ Justin Harding earning medalist honors by finishing one shot better than Notre Dame’s Cole Isban. In 2007, Michigan State took the tournament championship and Michigan State’s Ryan Brehm was the ’07 tournament medalist, finishing five shots clear of Notre Dame’s Doug Fortner and Virginia’s Greg Car- lin. Last season, Arkansas prevailed to take the team title, while Michigan State’s Randy Hutchison earned medalist honors. All three previous tournaments featured impressive fields, and 2009 will be no exception as Arkansas, BYU, Cincinnati, Colorado, Georgetown, Houston, Iowa, Lamar, Miami (OH), Missouri, Ohio State, San Francisco, Saint Mary’s (CA) and UT-Arlington join Senior Carl Santos-Ocampo Notre Dame to comprise the 15-team field. We’re pleased to bring so many of the nation’s top men’s collegiate golf teams together for a memorable weekend of great golf and football at “Ol’ Notre Dame!” Our first three events saw three of the top teams (Lamar ’06, Michigan State ’07 and Arkansas ‘08) in the coun- try take home the trophy in convincing fashion. All three teams won with over-par totals in mostly beautiful weather, though, which is a testament to the difficulty of our Warren Golf Course. Once again, “The Warren” should be up to the challenge! Lamar’s Justin Harding captured the individual championship in ’06 by holing out from just short of the final green to finish at 213 (+3) and defeat Notre Dame’s own Cole Isban and Vanderbilt’s Luke List by a single stroke. In 2007, Michigan State’s Ryan Brehm posted the tournament record in winning the individual title at 205 (-5) with, again, a Notre Dame golfer, Doug Fortner, in second, along with Virginia’s Greg Carlin at 210 (E). Last year, Michigan State’s Randy Hutchinson held off Andrew Landry of Arkansas to win by one stroke. Hutchinshon turned in an even-par 210, while Landry carded a 211 (+1). We’re thrilled to once again offer football tickets for all participants and coaches to our Fighting Irish versus Washington Huskies football game on Saturday afternoon here in storied Notre Dame Stadium, especially for those visiting schools who do not have college football programs. Enjoy the game! We are grateful for the support afforded our event from sponsors, volunteers, the Notre Dame Department of Athletics and our Notre Dame community. Area businesses such as the Waterford Estates Lodge has offered great support for our event. Our Warren Golf Course General Manager, John Foster, and his staff deserve special recognition for their sup- port of our golf programs throughout the year and their cooperation in hosting the FIGGC. Of course, our Golf Course Superintendent, Matt Cielen, deserves our gratitude for having the golf course in fantastic condition and ready to challenge even the best of players. Most importantly, our event would not have become a reality without the tremendous support and generos- ity of Mike and Debra Isban, and the Isban family. The concept for this event and the enjoyment it will provide to its participants was born of their love of golf and their love for the University of Notre Dame. We are most grateful for their commitment to the FIGGC and to our Notre Dame golf family. Please enjoy our unique event throughout the weekend. I hope it provides fond and lasting memories for you. Sincerely, Jim Kubinski University of Notre Dame Men’s Golf Coach Welcome to Notre Dame On behalf of the University of Notre Dame and the staff of the Warren Golf Course, it is our pleasure to welcome you to the third annual Fighting Irish Gridiron Golf Classic. Opened in 2000, the Warren Golf Course was designed by Bill Coore and Ben Cren- shaw. In its short history, the course already has played host to some of the nation’s pre- mier amateur events, including the 2005 NCAA Central Regional, three U.S. Amateur Championship qualifiers, three Western Amateur Championship qualifiers as well as an AJGA Junior Open from July 27-30, 2009. In addition, we have been pleased to be the host course for five BIG EAST Conference Men’s Championships and three BIG EAST Women’s Championships and look forward to playing host to a 2010 men’s NCAA Regional on May 20-22. The Warren Golf Course also continues to be recognized nationally and internationally for excellence in numerous major publications. In September 2005, the Warren Golf Course was selected as one of the nation’s top 15 on-campus college course, according to a feature article in Golf Digest. And in 2008, we were thrilled and honored to have Golfweek rate our course second in the state of Indiana as part of its series “America’s Best Courses: State-by-State Rankings of Best Public Access Courses.” We invite you to take advantage of everything our course has to offer, from the expansive driving range and adjacent putting green that greet you near the first tee, to the fantastic Warren Clubhouse Grill (with outdoor patio dining just off the 18th green) and our fully-stocked pro shop (designed to meet all your equipment and apparel needs) located inside our stately clubhouse. We hope you will enjoy your time here at the Warren Golf Course and we look forward to having you join us again soon for your next round of golf. If there is anything we can do to make your stay more enjoyable, please do not hesitate to let us know. Thank you again for joining us for this year’s event and good luck! Sincerely, John Foster, General Manager/Head Golf Professional, The Warren Golf Course at Notre Dame Ryan Gowen, Assistant Golf Professional Cody Risedorph, Assistant Golf Professional Matt Cielen, GCSAA, Course Superintendent Sue Mansfield, Pro Shop Manager Lana Taylor, Coordinator of Golf Course Services The Warren Golf Course May 1, 2000, marked the beginning of a new era in the history of Notre Dame golf as the University unveiled the championship- caliber William K. and Natalie O. Warren Golf Course at Notre Dame. Since its opening, the course has been hailed as one of the best new courses in America by Golf Digest and has been fea- tured in Links Magazine and Golf Digest as a must-play venue. In addition, Golfweek has tabbed the Warren Golf Course as one of the nation’s top 15 on-campus collegiate layouts. Through the generous donation of Notre Dame alumnus and Tulsa, Okla., resident Bill Warren (’56), the University features an impressive 18-hole golf course, designed by the Austin, Texas-based architectural firm of Coore and Crenshaw, headed by Bill Coore and PGA Tour veteran (and victorious 1999 U.S. Ryder Cup captain) Ben Crenshaw. The design of the Warren Golf Course is reminiscent of the classic, “walkable” Irish and American courses built in the late 19th and early 20th century, with short distances between the greens and tees.
