Preface A transparent and accountable system of Governance can be met to a large extent with the availability of reliable statistics. Department of Economics & Statistics has taken various steps and make continuous efforts to improve statistical system in the State to meet the increasing needs of diverse users. Panchayat Level Statistics is one of the initiatives in this line. In this publication, the available data at Grama Panchayat level compiled at district and published in every five year interval to enable data for micro level planning. We have already released three publications in this series in 1996, 2001 and 2006 respectively. This Publication ‘Panchayat Level Statistics-2011’ Alappuzha District is the fourth publication in this series. A team of officers in the Taluk Statistical Offices and District Statistical Office of Alappuzha District under the supervision of Sri.R.Sreekumar did a tremendous job for the collection of data needed for this publication. Alappuzha District came in to existence on 17th Auguest, 1957, the smallest district in the State in terms of area. The District is divided into two Revenue Divisions, six Taluks and 91 Villages. Revenue Division Alappuzha comprising of Cherthala, Ambalappuzha and Kuttanad Taluks and Chenganoor Revenue Division consisting of Karthikapally, Chenganoor and Mavelikkara Taluks. Alappuzha Revenue Division covering 47 Villages and Chenganoor Revenue Division covering 44 Villages. ii. The District is bound in the north by Kochi and Kanayanoor Taluks of Ernakulam district and on the East by Vaikom, Kottayam and Changanassery Taluks of Kottayam District and Thiruvalla, Kozhenchery and Adoor Taluks of Pathanamthitta District. On the south, it is bounded by Kunnathoor and Karunagappally Taluk of Kollam District and on the west by the Lakshadweep Sea. The District lies between the north latitudes 90 05’ and 90 54’ and the east longitudes 76017’30and 760’40”. iii. Alappuzha district consists of 3Sub-micro Region namely (1)Alleppey Coast (2) Kuttanad Low -lying Plains and (3) Chenganoor Rolling Plains. iv. Alleppey Coast is a low lying land having marshy areas in some places along the coast of the District comprising the whole of Cherthala taluk and part of Ampalappuzha , Karthikappally and Mavelikkara Taluks.The height of the land is very low-even below the sea level in some areas.Maximum height recorded is 18 m. in Vallikunnam Village of Mavelikkara Taluk. Kuttanad Low-lying Plains comprises of the whole of Kuttanad Taluk and parts of Ampalappuzha, Chenganoor, Mavelikkara and Karthikappally Taluks. The height of this region in many places is lower than the sea level and the maximum height recorded in Kunnamangalam Village is 6 m. Chengannur- Rolling Plain lies in the eastern portion of the District comprising parts of Mavelikkara and Chengannur Taluks. Average height of this region is between 80 and 90 m. v. The Manimala, the Pamba and Achancovil River are the important rivers flowing through the district. The Manimala River flowing through the Thalavady, Edathua and Champakulam Village in Kuttanad Taluk. The Pampa River enters the District at Chengannur and flows through Pandanad, Veeyapuram,Thakazhi and Champakulam.The Achacovil River passess through Venmony, Cheriyanad, Puliyoor and Chengannur Villages and Chennithala in Mavelikkara Taluk. vi. The Vembanad Lake and the Kayamkulam Lake are the two important backwaters of the District. The Vembanad Lake has a length of 84 km.
