This , however, is hardly he place to go into the details o f a knotty an d itm av s fi point of genealogy, uf ce , therefore , o w n o a a if I express my pinion , th t the Norwegi n origi n is the correct on e — that Leo d w as a so n o f Man an d s an d Olave the Black , King of the I les, that he w as born towards th e end of the tw elfth a a M rail century . Leod m rried the d ughter of cC t Ar m uin n a as , who brought Dunveg n her dowry, and it- h as rem ained in the possession of his a s e descend nt ver since . By her Leod had two — Torm od a MacL e ods sons , the ancestor of the H rris , w MacL e ods and Torquil , the ancestor of the Le es called the Si o l (or race of) To rm od and the Siol o T rquil respectively . For something like 200 years very little is w th e a a o f kno n of history o f either br nch . E ch them about 1 340 got grants o f mainland estates 6 THE MACLEODS . C — r MacL e ods from the rown the Har is in Glenelg , th e MacL eo ds Ass n t o and Lewes in y , but b th were C a an d a Island hieft ins held their l nds in Skye , o f Harris, and the Lewes under the Lords the o f Isles , so that their history is merged in that those powerful potentates ; they were present at a o f H arl aw 1 41 1 the B ttle , , where they occupied ’ the post of honour (the right wing) of th e Islander s army ; they were present atthe Battle of the Bloody Bay in 1 480 ; an d we find their names w s occasionally, as itnes es to Charters , but , as w o f already stated , little is kno n them , and that little not of very great interest .
