Over the past year, we’ve seen stark reminders of the barriers between our students and their goals. From immigration policies that threaten to break up families and make futures uncertain, to widespread reports of workplace behaviors that make people feel powerless and unsafe, 2017 was dominated by news cycles of hatred, bigotry and discrimination. But in 2017, the ScriptEd community worked harder than ever towards our vision of a better world. And I am filled with hope, because it was our most successful eary yet. Last year, ScriptEd programs launched in 3 schools in the Bay Area. This year, we will serve 200 students in 11 schools in San Francisco and Oakland. With an outpouring of support from schools, companies and foundations, our Bay Area community is growing quickly and creating many opportunities for our students to thrive. In New York City, more than 800 students took ScriptEd courses last year. We introduced new advanced course curriculum and expanded our summer work-based learning programs. And it paid off: our students are pursuing tech careers earlier and earlier, with several engaged in paid work opportunities during or right out of high school. We are excited to share their stories and more in this Annual Report. These stories are proof that one thing is always certain, even in the most uncertain times: with a high-quality education and a supportive community, all young people can thrive. We are grateful for the volunteers, partners and supporters who believe in our mission and fulfill our vision. In this Annual Report, we celebrate our impact together. Thank you for your continued support. Maurya Couvares Co-Founder and National Executive Director 3 OUR MISSION ScriptEd equips students in under-resourced schools with the fundamental coding skills and professional experiences that together create access to careers in technology. 4 WHAT WE DO Engage Volunteers Our courses are taught by experienced software developers on a volunteer basis, ensuring that our students have access to role models. Teach in Schools We bring tuition-free programs directly to schools where 75% or more of the student population qualifies for free or reduced price lunch. Partner with Companies Our Advanced and Studio programs take place at partner companies’ offices. Our curriculum is focused on industry- standard skills and tools, and is updated every year in collaboration with volunteers. Link to Careers Students apply their coding skills in paid summer internships where they gain the experience and confidence necessary to pursue careers in technology. Build Community Through Hackathons, summer programs, field trips, and alumni events, our students build a professional network and gain access to the thriving local tech community. 5 OUR IMPACT 2016-17 STATS 1,200 Students •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• • • ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• (projected) Reach 870 Students ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• • • ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• 665 Students ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• 289 Students •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• 80 Students •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• 27 Students ••••••••••••••••••••••••••• 2013-20141+62013-2014+272014-2015+582015-2016+792016-2017+1002017-2018 Student Population 81% 4545% 35+ 35% 15+ 15% 5 + 3% Latinx Black Asian white qualify for free or reduced price lunch 40% Female 60% Male Programs 40 761 9 109 Foundations classes students enrolled in Advanced classes taught at students enrolled in taught in high schools. Since I graduated from both ScriptEd and high school, I've been interning full-time at Oscar Health. I still continue to practice programming in my free time and plan to start college in the Spring. My intended major is Computer Science. How has ScriptEd made a difference in your life? ScriptEd has helped me improve my skills in professionalism and web development. I've been able to build a network of very talented and inspiring people within the tech industry – and work at a cool startup. Andre Garvin, 18 Software Engineering Intern, OpenFin What are you up to now? I have been working at OpenFin since my ScriptEd internship last summer, and attending LIU where I am majoring in Computer Science. I’ve also been networking in the tech scene – contributing to more projects on GitHub, going to tech meetups like BrooklynJS and EmpireJS. What do you want to be doing in 5 years? In my senior year, I helped co-teach an after-school program for computer science at my younger brother’s middle school. It is the most amazing feeling to know you are making a difference in your community and giving someone a chance they otherwise wouldn’t have had. I want to make a huge impact in my community, and give back to ScriptEd because of the opportunities they have given me, and the mentors that I have that I would never take for granted. Joel Colon & Luis Abreu, 18 Freelance Web Developers, Story + Rain What are you up to now? Luis: Since I graduated from high school, I've been focusing all my time on college and web designing for a client. Joel: I’ve started college as a full-time student, while doing web design for a client as part of a team of developers. How has ScriptEd made a difference in your lives? Joel: Without ScriptEd I would've missed out on several job opportunities that helped jumpstart my career, as well as some amazing mentors that helped guide and educate me. Luis: ScriptEd has given me the opportunity to work with professional programmers, and because of that I’ve learned how to better prepare myself in the future. What do you want to be doing in 5 years? Luis: In 5 years, I would want to complete my bachelors in computer science and work as a software developer. Joel: I want to complete a bachelor's degree in computer science, and to be researching or working on the development of artificial intelligence! 8 8 STORIES Current Students Edwin Acevedo, 15 Freelance Web Developer What are you up to now? After the Summer Academy, I had the opportunity to assist a NYU professor that needed a website to showcase her skills, and build her an online resume/portfolio. I have also been working on my coding skills in general. My goal is to complete a full functioning game by the end of 2017 that I can upload on the internet. How has ScriptEd made a difference in your life? ScriptEd is making a difference in my life by helping me make more friends and introducing me to people who I can network with, as I get older and further into my software engineering career. Nia Davis, 17 Founder, ChicCoding.com What are you up to now? I am taking a ScriptEd Studio Class at Google, and I am on the leadership board of ScriptEd’s <Hello/Girl> club, which supports young women in tech. I’m also working on a passion project to create ChicCoding.com, a website that attracts girls of all backgrounds to code. Over the past two years, I have found my passion with computer science. My goal is to start a nonprofit that introduces and inspires other girls to learn computer science. How has ScriptEd made a difference in your life? ScriptEd has made a massive difference in my life by introducing me to computer programming, and letting me know about events where I can network and engage with successful people. 9 9 OUR PROGRAMS Foundations Advanced Course Course 9th-10th Grade 10th-11th Grade 10 Foundations Students take ScriptEd class at their school, YEAR 1 and learn how to build interactive webpages with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
