Character Breakdown Ancestors: 1. Laozi (pronounced LAU-tsi) represents honor and is the leader of the group. 2. Lin represents loyalty and is the hardest on Mulan; Lin does not appreciate any challenges to the old-world belief system. 3. Zhang represents strength, the strong silent type. 4. Hong represents destiny and is Laozi’s right-hand man. 5. Yun represents love and is Mulan’s greatest advocate from the beginning - the mother figure that eventually encourages the others to support Mulan for who she is. She faces the worst enemy China has ever seen, the Hun leader Shan-Yu, who has an army willing to destroy anything in their path. In the army, Mulan discovers that she wants to be more than just someone’s daughter or wife. She is determined to prove that she too can be written in stone and give her family honor. He is a scrawny, tiny, red, orange-accented Chinese dragon with blue horns and a cheeky-chappy personality. Gender: female Chi Fu (chee FU) is your typical “bad guy,” the quintessential political character who is manipulative and proud to a fault. He is a member of the Emperor’s council and advisor to Li Shang who refuses to allow the recruits to join the battle against the Huns. Gender: male • Vocal range top: E5 • Vocal range bottom: E4 Shan-yu (shawn YU) is the cruel leader of the Huns who is bent on conquering China, and with his Hun army, climbs over the Great Wall and invades the land to prove his “superiority” to the Emperor. Gender: male Shang Shang is newly appointed as an army captain by his father, who is a general. Later, he becomes friends with Ping (who is Mulan disguised as a man), after his life is saved. He finds out she is actually a woman, which is forbidden by the empire’s law, punishable by death. Shang spares her life, and after helping her save the empire, he falls in love with her. Yao considers himself to be a big tough guy; he has a bark and bite, but all in all is a good person. Gender: male • Vocal range top: A5 • Vocal range bottom: E4 Ling is a bit of a scam artist, and not the brightest guy in the world. Gender: male • Vocal range top: A5 • Vocal range bottom: E4 Qian-po is a real sweetheart of a monk who would rather have a good meal than a battle scene. Gender: male • Vocal range top: A5 • Vocal range bottom: E4 Ensemble: The Ensemble provides sound effects throughout the show, but also steps into action when needed to play Fathers, Mothers, Daughters, Sons, Dressmakers, Hairdressers, Groomers, Young Hsaio, Older Yi, Young Yi, Magyar, Subar-Tu, Chen, Liu and the Cheongsam Salesperson. Featured roles vary in size and vocal requirements, but the Ensemble will be needed to provide vocal power throughout the performance and dance in the production numbers.
