It has the largest ageing population with 8,365 residents aged over 75 years, compared with the other Wirral constituency areas (28% of the population) Hoylake and Meols ward has the largest non-white British population and Upton ward has the largest number of Asian/Asian British residents Life expectancy in Wirral West constituency is 81.2 years this the highest when compared with Wirral and the other three constituencies. The gap between the ward with the highest (Greasby, Frankby and Irby) and the lowest life expectancy (Upton) is 6.3 years One in eight (12%) children live in poverty in Wirral West constituency. In Upton Ward one in every four children live in poverty (26%) Children achieving level 4 or above at Key Stage 2 in Wirral West constituency is above the Wirral average for all subjects. All wards apart from Upton ward achieved above the Wirral average Wirral West constituency has the lowest proportion (4.5%) of 16-18 year olds not in education, employment or training (NEET) when compared with the rest of Wirral and other constituencies Upton ward has the highest rate (115.3 per 10,000 children) of Looked after Children. This is higher than the constituency and Wirral average Hoylake and Meols ward has the highest rate of teenage conception with a rate of 29 per 1000 girls. However the overall rate for the constituency is lower than the Wirral average (17.8 per 1000 girls) Upton ward has the highest proportion of women smoking during pregnancy with 12%. However this is lower than the Wirral average with 14% More than half (69.5%) of all women in the constituency breastfeed in the first 48 hours after birth, higher than the Wirral average Uptake of primary childhood immunisations in Wirral West constituency is 95.7%. All wards apart from Upton have met the target uptake of 95% Wirral West constituency has not met the target uptake for Measles, Mumps and Rubella Immunisation, with 94.1% of children immunised One in eight (12.9%) children in Upton ward is obese at age 4/5 years. This is higher than the constituency and Wirral average A fifth (21.3%) of 10/11 year olds in Upton ward is obese. This is higher than the constituency and Wirral average One in eight (13.8%) are either killed or seriously injured in road collisions in Wirral West constituency. Pensby and Thingwall ward has the highest proportion with almost a fifth of casualties (19.4%) Wirral West constituency has the lowest rate of hospital admissions for falls in people aged over 65 years during 2011/12 with a rate of 32.4 per 1000 population A third of people aged over 65 years live alone in Wirral west constituency One in 10 residents (9.2%) claim housing benefit in Wirral West constituency. One in five residents claim housing benefit in Upton ward (19.8%) One in eight (13.7%) claim council tax benefit in Wirral West constituency. This lower than the Wirral average The claimant rate for Employment Support Allowance (ESA) for Wirral West constituency is the second lowest when compared with other constituencies. The most common reason for claiming ESA is mental health reasons (which include depression) and Upton ward has the highest claimants with a rate of 25.3 per 1,000 population. Wirral West constituency has the lowest death rates (Standardised Mortality Ratio (SMR) for all causes of mortality). Although in Upton ward the SMR is 121 thus meaning 20% more deaths have been observed, compared with the national average The Standardised Mortality Ratio (SMR) for deaths caused specifically by alcohol in Wirral West constituency is 15%higher than the national average SMR 115, but is lower than the Wirral average.
