Jayalalithaa for the State Governments recommendation to confer Padma Vibhushan, the 2nd Highest Civilian award by Government of India on our Chairman Dr.V. Shanta. This is one more laurel to the Institute and all the staff are proud, we pledge that we shall diligently strive to maintain, foster and uphold the tradition, dignity and ethos of Cancer Institute, fondly nurtured by our late adviser Dr. S. Krishnamurthi and our Chairman Dr. V. Shanta over the last sixty two years. We reaffirm our faith in the future of this great institution and shall try our best to abide by the principle of “Service above Self” for which Dr. S. Krishnamurthi and Dr. V. Shanta are the role model. Government of India approved Cancer Institute (WIA) for inclusion in the Tertiary Cancer Centre of National Programme for Prevention and Control of Cancer, Diabetes, CVDs and Stroke (NPCDCS) and designated the Cancer Institute (WIA) as a State Apex Centre with a total one time grant of Rs.120 crores on a shared based of 75% from Govt. of India and 25% from State Government towards building and purchase of new equipments. It cannot be used for maintenance. A 10 year MOU has been signed with the Govt. of Tamilnadu. The first instalment of Govt. of India grant under Tertiary Cancer Centre Scheme of National Programme for Prevention and Control of Cancer, Diabetes, CVDs and Stroke was released on 31.10.2015. The Diamond Jubilee Building construction has been started with this grand and as part of our Diamond jubilee year, additional facilities are planned in this new building. The total area is nearly 60,000 sq.ft. with a basement floor and four additional floors. The additional facilities will include: Special ward OP, Nuclear Medicine, Blood Bank, Special wards, BMT unit, ICU, Operation Theatre, Post Operative ward & CSSD unit. We thank all our donors for their generous support with whose help we continue to deliver quality service to our patients with the cutting edge technology and protocols on par with the world’s best. The Institute made major strides in the year 2015 – 2016, faculty, staff and students continue to bring laurels to the Institute, we congratulate every one of them. Institute has comprehensive facilities for patient care, research both basic and clinical & teaching with teaching programmes in medical and para-medical courses both at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. During the year the faculty and the scientists of the institute published research papers in national and international journals, various departments organized conferences, workshops & CME. 8 We have always been on the fore front on early detection, prevention of cancer and tobacco control, thorough out the year we have been focusing on creating cancer prevention awareness. Department of Preventive Oncology has launched the MAMMOMOBILE project with the aim to offer awareness and baseline screening for early detection of breast cancer. All women of age 30 - 60 years will be offered a baseline screening of breast with Clinical Breast Examination (CBE), all women above 40 years of age will undergo Mammogram and USG breasts along with CBE.
