While Luzardo struck out 10, including his first five in a row, and allowed just three hits and one st rd th walk, 3B J.P. Sportman paced the Midland offense with all three of the ‘Hounds RBIs, coming in the 1 , 3 and 5 frames. RHP Mike O’Reilly allowed just the three runs in 5.0 innings before scoreless relief from LHP Elniery Garcia (2.0 IP), rehabbing RHP Luke Gregerson (1.0 IP) and LHP Jacob Evans (1.0 IP), but the ‘Hounds countered with three scoreless relief innings of their own to claim the 3-0 win. Called to the Future… C Andrew Knizner has been added to the 2018 MLB All-Star Futures Game in place of injured Midland C Sean Murphy. Hitting .318 with three homers, 16 doubles and 32 RBIs in 63 games between Springfield and AAA-Memphis this year, the 23 year old from Richmond, VA will join the US Team in one of the most prestigious prospect showcases in baseball. Knizner joins former Springfield Cardinals RHP Dakota Hudson and OF Randy Arozarena as St. Louis farmhands in the Futures Game this season. Strong starts… The Cardinals received very good starting pitching throughout the Midland series, beginning with RHP Sam Tewes’s 7.0 one-run innings on 7/7, RHP Connor Jones’s 6.0 shutout frames on 7/8 and RHP Mike O’Reilly’s 5.0 three-run stanzas on 7/9. The three hurlers combined to go 2-1 with a 2.00 ERA, allowing four runs across 18 innings. To the nines… With a pair of doubles on Monday, INF Ramon Urias extended his hitting streak to nine consecutive contests, batting .333 (12x36) with three homers, six doubles, seven RBIs and six runs during that stretch. The Magdalena de Kino, Mexico native has tallied an RBI in seven of his 13 games since returning from AAA-Memphis on 6/24 and has hit in 24 of his 30 games with Springfield overall, not once having his batting average dip below .300 in Double-A. Midseason form… With home runs in two of his last four games and RBIs in three of those contests, CF Lane Thomas has continued to swing a great bat through the middle of the season, starting July by hitting .278 (10x36) with two long-balls, a triple and eight RBIs in nine games. Since June 1, he is hitting .285 (37x130) with six home runs, five doubles, one triple and a team-leading 25 RBIs in 34 games. Up to 15 round-trippers on the year, he ranks t-4th among the league’s top home run hitters, while ranking t-4th in the circuit and 1st in the Cardinals organization with 56 RBIs. Garcia great in debut… LHP Elniery Garcia made his Cardinals debut on Monday evening, tossing a pair of scoreless relief innings with just one hit allowed. The 23 year old from Cotui Santiago, Dominican Republic was acquired by St. Louis from Philadelphia for international cap space on 7/5 after going 27-26 with a 3.43 ERA in 86 games / 72 starts as a Phillies farmhand from 2012 – 2018, getting as high as Double-A Reading.
