Renamed Salerno Bay, 6 November 1943 (three months before her keel was laid down), to commemorate the initial assault of Allied 130k forces on the Italian peninsula, 9 September 1943 (Operation Avalanche). Salerno Bay is a variant term for the Gulf of Salerno, an NavSource inlet of the Tyrrhenian Sea, south of Naples, Italy (NS0311016a).
